Without Foster swinging and hitting Watson in the head in the 1st Qtr and then launching and hitting him when he was already in the grip of 2 tacklers...and Brown targeting Williams twice Clemson would have beaten Bama by 5 TDs. It took Watson 2 Qtrs to clear his head and Williams missed about half the game. Phuk Saban and his dirty players. And, if a WR has ALA beaten they just level him with a vicious hit and take a 15 yd penalty from the LOS, this is not PI - that should be an ejection and the ball at the spot of the flagrant foul plus 15 yds. Plus the refs stopped play too many times and stopped Clemson Tempo.

Foster was flagged with a personal foul penalty while some thought the hit should have been considered targeting. Either way, that's the type of penalty Alabama is willing to live with. Saban had Foster send a message that slowed Watson for the rest of the game. Fifteen yards is something the coaches will take as a result. Dirty play is Saban's calling card.

Oh look, another missed targeting call.

The Big 12 referee crew missed two obvious targeting penalties in the first quarter of Monday night’s College Football Playoff National Championship Game as college football continues to inconsistently define targeting.

Early in the game, Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster used his forearm to nearly decapitate Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson to the tune of no whistle.

Later in the quarter, as Alabama’s Anthony Averett held up Clemson receiver Mike Williams following a first-down catch, defensive back Tony Brown landed a skull-crushing hit on Clemson’s star receiver. Williams is familiar with head and spine injuries as he missed most of last season with a broken neck.

Brown smashed an already-slowed Williams who went limp momentarily and appeared to black out. Williams fumbled the ball into his chest and recovered it as he regained consciousness. While the play was still live, Brown obviously launched himself causing head-to-head contact with Williams.

Again, no whistle.

Williams was taken off to sideline and appeared to be dazed, but returned to the field minutes later.

The lack of consistency involving targeting has been maddening all season. In the previous drive, Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts drew a roughing the passer penalty on Clemson from a slap to his helmet. That penalty was nowhere as egregious as either Foster’s clothesline or Averett’s demolition of Williams.

Bama game this year.

Foster hits Etling as the QB was sliding. Not even a whiff from the SEC refs.

Saban has his players try to knock out QBs, RBs, especially WRs who are open and in position to make a catch. He would rather take the 10-15 yd penalties. that are so insignificant where ALA is concerned, than give up a score. In 2013 Jeoffrey Pagan said Saban told him to step on "their necks so we can send in the subs".

Williams already missed last year with a broken neck. What will ultimately kill this sport is egregious, flagrant, fouls which result in injury or death. Record numbers of players are being disabled, electing not to play because of concussions, and the the guarantee of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy.

Knocking Watson & Williams out of the game would guarantee Little Nicky his one last trophy.

BUT HE CAME UP A LITTLE SHORT

In his post game interview he had a melt similiar to the one he had after losing to Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl Semifinal:

Saban Melt after Ohio State Loss to a 3rd String QB making his 3rd start.

"I don't think you necessarily have to get a trophy to be a winner." -Nick Saban

That hit on Watson by Foster was as dirty of a hit as there is in football. Any other team would have had their player ejected. He got away with it because he plays for bama.

Alabama losing tonight will make the long off season a little less brutal.

That hit on fournette is clean, no helmet to helmet. Now the hits against Clemson were not and should have been penalized

Note 1: "Targeting" means that a player takes aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball. Some indicators of targeting include but are not limited to: Any ONE of These makes it Targeting

Launch—a player leaving his feet to attack an opponent by an upward and forward thrust of the body to make forcible contact in the head or neck area

A crouch followed by an upward and forward thrust to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area, even though one or both feet are still on the ground

Leading with helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area

Lowering the head before attacking by initiating forcible contact with the crown of the helmet

Agreed, both were targeting and should have led to ejections. Those are career ending types of hits and should be dealt with seriously

Both plays, especially the Brown hit, could have/should have garnered flags. Both would have extended drives, field pos, etc.

Have to LAUGH at the Bama board....much whining about picks plays, but no comments about these....hmm. 'So goes the lesson!'

And many of these extremely dirty tactics being taught are being carried over to the league. And SEC refs will never call it. Wait until an opposing player is seriously hurt without a call and a lawsuit is brought against the SEC. That's the only thing that will change the "Tide"

And the announcers were pretty much immediately saying "no foul" before the replay even ran.

Saban could play the game straight up and either win or lose cleanly and preserve the sport. God knows he has enough Roster strength. But he knew Watson was going to outplay Hurts. Kiffen's ouster was a bonehead move. And he knew their Pace of Play was going to wear down that Defense if he did not try to slow Clemson down. He did not play the game fairly and he GOT WHAT HE DESERVED.

Targeting doesn't just mean helmet to helmet

quote:

And if this is the game we’re going to hope remains with us three decades from now, we’re going to have to let it evolve. "When in question, it is a foul," the rule says. We have to err on the side of player safety, and if that requires rules even more game-changing than targeting (it surely does), then so be it.

Slow Motion: 2nd "Targeting hit by Reuben Foster" using only his helmet to hit Watson in the Facemask. This only shows at slow motion.

It was 17-14 ALA

Clemson was doing all it could to get back into the College Football Playoff championship game against Alabama on Monday night when Deshaun Watson got a first-hand reminder just how punishing the Tide defense can be.

Watson was scrambling on a 3rd-and-15 late in the third quarter and appeared to have daylight for a first down, but then Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster lined him up and sent him spinning through the air:

The biggest hit of the game? https://t.co/FtoLsCZNYR

— ESPN (@espn) January 10, 2017

That’s about a 540-degree spin off a hard shot to the chin. Ouch.

To add insult to injury, Watson landed shy of the first down marker and the Tigers had to punt. Alabama scored a touchdown on the ensuing drive to go up 24-14.

Watson got the last laugh though. He and the Tigers scored 21 points in the fourth quarter — including a touchdown with one second to go to — to stun Alabama, 35-31, and win the national title.
