Why do academics matter when it comes to Athletic Conference?

This "Mizzou academics want into the B1G" got me thinking...
Why does it matter how good the schools are in your conference?
It's like the Dallas Cowboys not wanting to join their division in the NFL b/c Philadelphia has a high crime rate..
What am I missing?

Because the school form relationships that lead to acadmemic research money.
Specifically, the AAU lobbies as a group in Washington and funnel those research dollars and grants to their member institutions

does their membership in an athletic conference preclude them from pursuing such relationships elsewhere whilst playing football against the teams in its conference?

Mizzou offers tv markets and very good academics
WVU offers better football and bball programs than Mizzou
This expansion is about tv markets not quality of programs

Of course not, but when Presidents of universities meet, shite happens, so it matters.

They don't. It just gives the academic guys a comeback when professors are giving them shite about athletics.

no, but its way easier when you have a shared association already. Ivy League is an athletic conference, but its member institutions identify themselves through their association in that conference. MIT is a great school, yet it is not an "Ivy League" school.

you aren't missing a damn thing. the eggheads in academia need to feel they are "in association" with people that are as "smart" as them. it is snobbery from people that suck off us taxpayers and have never held a real job in their life. before you folks call me ignorant, etc, i've known, on a personal basis several "professors and higher up college academia adm. higher ups" and i stick by my statements. i do have an undergraduate degree; i'm just callin' 'em like i see 'em. if harvard applied to the SEC, the eggheads would be beside themselves because for some strange reason they would now think they would be elevated intellectually.

Academic reputation matters to academics. The truth is that the big ten has a better academic reputation than the SEC. Is it fair? No, not really. Is it true? Many people say yes.
If you're an academic you want association with the best academic reputations. Just like in athletics you want the same thing.
You have to remember that people in a profession want to be associated with people with good reputations.

It matters a lot in the Big Ten and was much talked about when Nebraska joined the Big Ten.
quote:
But here's what Perlman said about the AAU and the Big Ten shortly after Nebraska was admitted to the league.
"All the Big Ten schools are AAU members. I doubt that our application would've been accepted had we not been a member of the organization."
The Huskers' nationally known football program might have had a little to do with it, too.
Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany, speaking at last year's spring meetings as expansion was heating up, had this to say about the Big Ten and its AAU ties: "AAU membership is a part of who we are. It’s an important part of who we are."
LINK
Nebraska was kicked out of the AAU shortly after joining the Big Ten. Like Missouri, they had been members since 1909.
Missouri and Kansas are both AAU members. So it Rutgers, Pittsburgh and Syracuse. Syracuse and Pitt are headed to the ACC.

Academics is what Texas hides behind so they can avoid being in a big pond with big fish.

i agree with you sir. that supports my view also. i guess i was making light of the academic community. god bless them; we need them; etc. i made a living doing; getting things done; accomplishing things and making money for myself and others. therefore my somewhat shallow opinion of people "on the sideline".
