re: What happens to LSU schedule next year

I'm an LSU fan and have no problem with Florida as our perm opponent. All of the football powerhouses in the SEC have their own cycles when they are dominant and when they are weak. Yes, between select periods of time, LSU had a "harder" perm opponent with Florida, but Tenn has been great at times (for Bama), Georgia has been great at time (for Auburn). I think it balances out over long periods of time.

This.
BTW, eventhough I live in Montana now and cant go to the games, I kept my season tickets that Ive had for the last 25 or so years and let by brother in law and sister and their family go to the game and he hates so many of the so-called cupcake games.

I simply cannot see the permanent rivalries being ended. How much money has the LSU/FL series made for the SEC in TV ratings over the years? How often has it been the site of College Gameday? And it doesn't have nearly the tradition of a Bama/Tenn or Auburn/UGA game.
I think we're looking at a 9 game SEC schedule. And if that means one less warm up game, so be it. I just feel bad for schools like UGA and UF, who are politically required to play GTech and FSU every year. That's essentially schedule with 10 tough games. But it is what it is.

i agree...Plus on another note, from an LSU perspective, i want to feel like other teams joined the SEC, NOT LSU joined another conference. with some of the talk around inviting OU/OSU/A&M/Missouri to get to 16 teams(West type teams), to me, that is more likely to feel like LSU joined the Big 12 which i personally don't like (again, that is depending upon how the set up the divisions and scheduling)

I think most Tiger Fans like them as a permanent opponent, but I don't see how it will work.
I highly doubt the SEC will add a 9th conference game to everyone's schedule. So this means that of 8 games, now 6 will be in division. If we go to 16 teams, 7 will be in division games. That leaves 1 or 2 non-division games, tops. If we keep FLA, that means you will only see the other 6 or 7 SEC schools every 6 or 7 years. You may not play in their venue for 12 or 14 years.
I think the most reasonable option in a 14 or 16 team conference is to rotate the non-division games evenly, or else add another conference game. But again, I really doubt the SEC will do this.
Finally, hypothetically, if the SEC does add another conference game to accommodate rivalries and permanent opponents, do we drop one of our two annual cupcake games, or one of our big two non-conference games? Dropping a cupcake is bad for the cupcakes, and rough on a team. Dropping a big non conference game could be bad for strength of schedule. I haven't heard a good solution to any of this yet, IMO.

OU isn't coming. I think we're done in the West. I see zero reason to move to 16 teams, regardless of what the PAC-12 does.
I don't see the advantage of 16 teams AT ALL.

How is 16 teams a solution to a scheduling problem created by 16 teams?

4 divisions, 2 permanent, adjacent division rivals.. I posted it in the other thread..
quote:
4 SE teams
4 SW teams
4 NE teams
4 NW teams
a SW team has a perm rival to the SE and NW
play all their division and one from each other division.. all teams get played in 3 years (2 for adjacent divisions) and home/away every 4-6 years.
eta: AND you stay with 8 game conference schedules for more out-of-conference fun times in Jerryworld

Yeah, i see your points. bottom line is that there are many complex logistical issues to expansion and i hope the powers that be at the SEC office and at the member schools have thought through all of these types of issues. However, like most other business decisions money will trump most, if not all, of these other issues.

BayTiger -
have you assigned the current SEC schools, along with A&M, and either Missouri or WVA into that format to map out your proposal? if so, can you post it?

I might later but it'll be easier when we know the 16 teams
