You mean like the WAC, who thinks that it will improve its revenues by adding the following "major media market" schools:
1) a D-2 Jesuit school (Seattle University),
2) a school only known for hockey (Denver University), and
3) a school that hasn't played football in 16 years (with no plan to resume it anytime soon) and has a total of three men's and women's basketball NCAA tournament appearances (UT-Arlington, my alma mater)?

Throw in UT-San Antonio which just started its program.

Why do people think that just because a team is in a city, the team "has that market"? Its fricking stupid.

What's fricking stupid is admonishing posters in a thread that never mentioned said stupid idea. Not a useful conversation technique.

Well since TCU is in Ft Worth, and SMU is in Dallas, this really is not all that surprising.

OF course Ft Worth has a population of 750K and is predicted to be at 1.2 million by 2030.

TCU wouldn't be a disaster, but it certainly isn't my first choice. The SEC would really beef up its Texas presence with two Texas teams, but I don't think TCU has a ton of fans (of course if they were somehow able to compete in the SEC, that could change in a hurry).

I tend to prefer the ACC options like FSU, Va. Tech, or Clemson. One of the NC schools would be great, but that seems very unlikely.

TCU and Missouri below them.

Last choice would be somewhere like Louisville or West F'in Virginia.

Yay or nay to TCU as #14?

To me, Missouri is the more logical choice by adding the St. Louis and Kansas City (5 million viewers) TV markets. But I would have no problem with TCU.

Its the same met area, which is what is usd to determine ratings.

From the article posted:

"Mike Slive loves the state of Texas. Over the years the SEC commissioner has eyed it, coveted it and plotted over it. All those television sets."

"more big media markets"

So, wow, I guess that's part of the thread then, huh?

No way. They should add Florida State, Clemson, or Georgia Tech, IMO.

It shouldn't be all about expanding into new markets.

If you get "has the market" out of this, you're straining to look for it. The argrument for TCU is more strategic than pure cash. While there are teams I would take before them (e.g. FSU, OK, VT), I would take them before OSU (w/o OK), MO, Clemson, or GaTech. As the article states, it's about location.

In all seriousness, although TCU is a fine school with a great football team, the SEC is looking for a school with more of a following than the Horned Frogs.

I think the SEC has Oklahoma as it's first choice, followed by an eastern school, then Missouri.

While I don't rule out 16 teams down the road, this go round might only be to 14. But that depends on what the Big Ten and Pac 12 do.

Who knows? Exciting times though!

"What [the sec] needs is more big media markets"

"But A&M’s appeal to Alabama, Florida and the others is about allowing league television contracts to be renegotiated (this time with Houston, San Antonio, etc. in the mix)"

I didnt have to strain to hard to find that. Whats more, is that its stupid think that playing a school in a certain city gives you "access" to that city's recruits. Does playing UAB give Ohio State access to Alabama recruits? Does playing South Florida give Virginia access to Florida recruits?

The guy is pumping up TCU because many reporters have tried to make the terrible argument that if these small schools (Boise, TCU) just played in a better conference, they'd be great.

yes and yes...

those potential recruits can see you play, talk to the coaches, etc.

I too mentioned this to a buddy the other day, it would definitely open up the Dallas area to SEC crootin'. At least alot more than it is right now. Would be good for football and baseball for sure.

No, and no. Whether TCU is in the SEC or not, SEC teams are behing Texas and Oklahoma for recruits. The national teams will have no more reruiting power than they already did.

they were pretty good- when they were playing someone worth a shite, lik FSU or Notre Dame. Otherwise, no one cared. When a conference looks at a team they want a team that cdraw fans whether they're doing good or bad.

it sure wouldn't hurt as long as you beat them in fort worth, which you should

then again if we have A&M, why do we need TCU?

The SEC will take A&M and Oklahoma in the West. Auburn and Alabama join the East. The West isn't big enough for Saban and LSU. We'll have plenty of time to see each other at the annual SEC Championship Game. This way the Gators won't have to cry about Florida State every year. It's about an equal trade off in the West A&M and Auburn plus Oklahoma for Alabama. The East just got tougher for the Dawgs and Gators.
