Third most. He'll never pass Sul Ross (who basically saved A&M from closure and forced merger with t.u.) or Rudder (who brought A&M into the modern era by abolishing mandatory Corps service and allowing women to enroll).

I think the only way you can compare Loftin is to modern-day Presidents, and in that he fares pretty well. It'd be a battle between himself and Dr. Gates (Sec. of Defense), and that'd be a close one too.

According to Ethridge, although it is unlikely that a waiver will ever be signed by all remaining members of the Big 12, the institutions are willing to be party to a gentlemen’s agreement so long as the SEC does not attempt to or agree to poach another school from the Big 12.

I have no problem with this...then when the deal is sealed we'll go poach another school just to show them we can.

I doubt anyone agreed to anything like that unless it was written in stone.

Gentleman's agreement better be written in stone!

Maybe the Big12 teams agreed to stay in the Big 12 (namely OK). But, there is no way the SEC would agree not to "poach" other Big12 teams to get A&M. And, no offense to A&M. Bottomline is the SEC would not agree to be handcuffed like that considering the landscape of all of the conferences seem to be evolving to expansion.
