Or at least its athletic director thinks so: CLICK

quote:

(WMC-TV) - University of Memphis Athletic Director R.C. Johnson said the Tigers "deserve" to be in the SEC in an interview Monday with Action News 5.

Appearing on the first day of 'Paint the Town Blue' week, Johnson addressed the university's position in the midst of a flurry of conference re-alignments in recent months.

"We want to try to get ourselves in the best possible place," Johnson said. "Ultimately we would like to be in the SEC. That's where we think we belong geographically. We think we deserve to be."

Openings in the Big East after the departures of Syracuse and Pittsburgh led to speculation that Memphis could eventually be destined for that conference. However, Johnson's comments Monday may have signaled otherwise.

"We're turning over every stone possible because we want to make this a bright future for Tiger Athletics, and conference realignment I think is part of that," Johnson said.

You've got to hand it to the man, that is one hell of a sense of entitlement!

So :CSB: but I worked in the Memphis athletic Dept. right after I graduated from LSU and if there is a dumber AD than R.C. Johnson I'd like to see it.

He doesn't get much coverage outside of Memphis, but that guy is a full blown fricking moron. The fact that place even continues to function blows my mind.

The sick thing about this statement is that he really believes it. He probably hasn't had a single discussion with either the Big East or SEC but probably really thinks Memphis is too good for the first and truly diserving of the latter.

My feelings are similar to mule's. Not to mention their football facilities can't compare to some of the Memphis area HS's. There is little to no money to gain from adding Memphis.

I think everyone in the world, with the exception of R.C. Johnson, thinks the same thing.

If Mizzou is going to string this along it would be funny to add Memphis. They are so bad at football though

Hoover H.S. has a better chance of getting into the SEC...most probably has a better football team as well.

The Big East makes sense for Memphis. They are bad right now. Take the baby step. Big East is pretty much dead. Joining a BCS conference will help recruiting. Work up to a BCS game, get a better venue. Memphis would easily be the worst team in the SEC as they pretty much are in conference USA.

There aren't words to describe how bad their football program is. They really should just stop playing football because at this point, it isn't making them any money.

I can think of 5 CUSA schools that would probably get taken in the SEC before Memphis was even considered.

East Carolina
SMU
Rice
Houston
Tulane
