If it's more than 2/3 this could get interesting.

Kansas, Kansas St., Baylor, and Iowa St. could remain the Big-12 (which has an automatic BCS invite) and invite 8 other schools to join them.

Edt: Not to mention, they'd collect a fee from every team that leaves.

9 teams voting to dissolve the conference or 7 teams pulling out of the conference.

9 teams voting to do so would mean there would be no buyout of $10 million / team.

Otherwise, 7 teams pulling out means that the conference only has 5 teams with a history of playing each other. Since you have to have at least 6 teams with a history of playing each other to be recognized by the NCAA, it means the conference would no longer be recognized and, as such, lose its BCS bid.

The remaining 5 teams or less would get to split a payout of at least $70 million in buyouts from the other schools, though.

Additionally, the automatic invite will likely be pulled at the end of the 2012 season if Texas and OU leave (in addition to Nebraska and Colorado), so there wouldn't be much incentive to keep the conference intact.

But if they add TCU, BYU, Utah, SMU and 4 others then they've still got a conference with enough wins and bowl appearances that the BCS would have a hard time pulling the invite.

The NCAA legally can't recognize it as a conference if, at any point, the membership drops below 6 teams with a history of playing each other.
