not here to stir up any drama or pick one side of the other. i don't care. whatever makes college football better is what i'm for.

i'm just intriqued by the whole thing and i heard an interesting debate on Houston sports talk radio yesterday afternoon driving home from work.

The schools that aren't ever able to get into the power conferences we are about to see develop, how do they survive, compete, thrive?

The UH's, LATech's, Southern Miss', etc, etc that already don't have the support, funds, backing to compete at a major level and were never considered athletic power houses.

Are they just left behind to dwindle away while the rich get richer?

Yes. It will not be a formal separation (like 1-A / 1-AA), but the gap between the Power 64 (the four groups of 16) and the other 56 schools will be extremely large.

Maybe the MWC and CUSA could both go to 16 and get a BCS play in game of some sort.

But all schools will still be 1A, per say, because the P64 schools need to play these guys OOC, and these guys need to play the P64 schools for the cash.

C-USA will be fine in my opinion, probably improve even more as a basketball conference that's for sure.

I think the dominoes are falling in place for 4 power conferences with 16 teams apiece and a playoff system.

I think everyone else settles for some watered down bowl system or they start kicking arse in I-AA.

see that's the way i'm thinking it will happen too.

basically major league and a minor league of college football.

not that the Boise BCS Buster types ever had a legitimate shot at making a NC, but this will only make it more impossible for those left behind.

and financially how do these schools survive?

granted Texas will always schedule SMU and cut them a big check.
LSU will always schedule LATech and cut them a check. but still...

why because they bring absolutely nothing to the conference besides a GPA and yet get to stick around to be apart of it?

Make that the P66. Forgot ND and BYU .

The only guys this TRULY effects in this way are Utah (they got in), Boise/Baylor/Iowa State/maybe some Big East schools (they didn't get in). On the extremes, this really has no effect on the LSU's and USC's or likewise the New Mexico States and Troys (they never had a shot anyway).

I wonder if the little guys will consolidate into gorups of 16 as well. If they do, then there could be some REAL losers in this - the teams that don't even make those conferences. The ULM's, etc.

it will certainly be interesting to see some of these schools and their athletic departments in 5-10 years.

it is all very interesting really.

Tulane for example obviously has no shot at the P64/66. They are talking about building a stadium. Would it be better to have their own or just stay in the Dome if this Power split goes down? Might as well stay in the Dome right - you will never get meet the stadium attendance needs in order to make money with your own stadium if you are tied into what is essentially the minor leagues. North Texas just built a new stadium, if there is the P64/66 and the everyone else - UNT might not even be in the everyone else category. Sucks to spend all that money on stadiums with the hopes of going big time in 10-20 years when you have no shot anymore.

The entire thing is FUBAR. If they go to the P64/66 I would be willing to bet that players/former players/future players team up with some legal team along the way to force the NCAA to pay them. I am sure there is some case in there where the players could go to court and win when the confeences are getting 100's of millions.

Then it all comes crashing back down.

The P64/66 thing sounds real cool but I honestly don't think it is a good thing overall. Of course I will still be watching so I guess it doesnt matter much.

If the 16-team conferences get arranged the way it sounds, there will be several notable schools left without a chair at the table. I could see some of them, especially across the Heartland, grouping together to form a 5th conference. Those would be: Boise St, TCU, BYU, Kansas St, Iowa St, Baylor, Texas Tech, Memphis, Houston, and SMU. Kansas would be on this list if they didn't get a Big 10 invite and Louisville and Cincy would be if they didn't get an ACC invite.

those are some good points you make.

if you're left out, and even if you find the money, why spend it? you can't get in.

4 16 team conferences

Each conference has a division.

A winner from each division = 8 teams

Each division winner from each conference plays the other division winner.

The winners are seeded 1,2,3,4
The losers are seeded 5,6,7,8

4 more 16 team conferences made up of the smaller schools

Same divisional setup and champ game.

Winners are seeded 9,10,11,12

1-4 have a bye in the first round. 9-12 play 5-8

Then you have your 8 team playoff.

Yea, that's great to dream about, but never going to happen.

The PAC could get 16 teams
The SEC could get 16 teams (but I think they'll stop at 14)
The Big10 isn't going to add 4 more teams if they are the likes of Kansas and Kansas State
You would need the BigEast/ACC to merge, and that sure as shite isn't going to happen.

If the super conferences happen, it won't be long until the NCAA gets left out also.
