if nothing further happens CAN the NCAA put a size limit on conferences--for the good of the game (and i don't mean the TV game): objective--to keep conferences reasonably regional, cut down on travel expenses--fans and teams, preserve traditional rivalries, keep the lesser conferences from being completely swamped/dominated/raided by power conferences?

I sure hope so and that they do. I think the prospects of superconferences only raises the ante of what the fan will have to pay and I don't like what that looks like at the end of the road. just me.

I was wondering about this last week. But my understanding is that schools are members of the NCAA, not the conferences. If that's the case, then the NCAA has no power over conference size. Also, if the schools control the NCAA, then it's only authority is derived from the schools. If they give the NCAA power, then it has the power. With the big money grab going on right now, I don't think I'm out on a limb saying that the schools are not going to give the NCAA any power to do anything that would cut into their revenues.

If you took a poll right now, i'd bet you more schools would vote to expand NCAA power and include regulating the size of conferences than not. think of all the angst nation wide over the last few days vs. those that clearly stood to gain. one school is one vote.

My assumption is as long as the schools are a part of the NCAA then the NCAA can regulate.

Well, creating an expanded roll for the NCAA is probably about as easy as passing a health care bill or maybe less.

My understanding is that the NCAA is 90% the NCAA basketball tournament and 10% rule enforcement.

Allowing the NCAA to expand its roll to dictating conference membership would be a big step, and I bet the conferences would be the first to take a stand against it.

The NCAA does dictate a minimum size to conference, specifying that a conference has to have 6 members with a history of playing each other in order to be recognized as such.

I don't think they have any rules on the book for a maximum size. If they did, the Big East would have run into them by now with 18 members in all sports but football.

and don't you have the feeling that the schools' respective fan bases were the last on the list of concerns by the people that started this?

not dictating conference membership--just the size. or approve a proposed conference re-alignment. i don't know, but this exercise could have, or still could, have had some unintended consequences that were not very good for the game or the majority of schools.
