I think Chavis deserves that this year. Miles and Crowton should pay back all their money (sarcasm).

My point is why is one of the best DCs in the nation (definitely in the top 4) being paid less than our running backs coach and about the same as our DB and DL coaches?

Really, really sad.

He's likely got $375,000 now if you assume they got the same raises after this past title like after the 2006 title, but that's still ridiculous. He's also Associate Head coach, which makes it even harder to believe.

Honestly though, it just tells me that LSU has to overpay to bring talented or supposedly talented coaches here.

Chavis and Crowton aren't just assistant coaches - they're OCs and DCs, plus position coaches. I dunno if Strong is also a position coach or even if that aspect of the job is relevant to the discussion, but it *may* explain the difference. Porter's a recruiting god and arguably as important to the success of the team as the above two, just in terms of getting the talent to LSU. Cooper and Haley were also billed as elite position coaches.

...That said...

Crowton also had a head coaching stint in college and a coordinator job in the pros. LSU might have felt like it needed to throw top dollar to get and keep him.

More or less the same with Chavis; he was a big name coming off of his departure from Tennessee and had an impressive resume, so LSU threw the cash at him to get him.

I'm not sure what the story is with Cooper. I've heard he had a fallout at South Carolina with Spurrier, but it seems far more likely LSU outbid USC for him, which is why he's got such a high salary.

And Haley was at an NFL job. LSU had to throw the cash at him.


Basically, it's not necessarily earning your keep. Most of them seem to be... but the big thing is that LSU basically emptied its pockets to get those guys. They had big initial numbers. (Remember, all but Crowton and Porter were just hired last year.)

Ummm... just like Chavis Strong is DC, LBer coach, and Associate head coach (something neither Chavis nor Crowton are).

He is as good a recruiter as you can get too. The guy averages bringing in like 4-6 4 and 5* players a year. Chavis doesn't even fricking recruit much.
