Arizona State was never going to hire him.
From what some Arizona State grads have told me, the main reason Graham was fired was that he almost exclusively recruited Texas and hardly recruited Arizona.
That's one major contributing reason that the #1 Arizona player in 2013 (Priest Willis - UCLA/A&M), 2014 (Kyle Allen - A&M/Houston) and 2015 (Christian Kirk - A&M) didn't go to Arizona State.

All those players were successfully recruited by sumlin, so why wouldn't ASU want him for that reason?

Yeah, they all went to Texas AM, so why wouldn't ASU hire the guy that recruited the kids ASU wanted?
