I like both hires, especially Longo. Curious to see if he can overhaul Wisconsin’s offense.

They're going to shred it between the 20s.

Going from that traditional offense Wisconsin has run to Phil Longo’s air raid with a lot of power spread running formations should be interesting. I liked him at Ole Miss but man his offense could be frustrating. His entire playbook was half a page of paper and both AJ Brown and DK Metcalf said they had routes called “get open.” He never had a complete route tree and it caused both of them to fall in the draft. Bills starting TE Dawson Knox who is close to a top 10 TE in the league did not catch a single touchdown in college under Longo.

Wisconsin has the potential to be very very good quickly if Tanner Mordecai can perform.

I would think since he's been so quiet so far, he's likely waiting for an NFL DC job to open.

The red zone stuff has become a bit exaggerated, but there is some truth to it. 2018 at Ole Miss they averaged 7.12 yards per play, tied for 4th best in the nation. 2017 it was 6.9, which was 9th. Those two years they ranked 29th and 33rd in scoring offense.

His offense also has struggled when not at a talent advantage. 32.8 PPG overall in 2017, and 33.9 PPG overall in 2018. But against arguably the two most talented defenses they played...

3 points vs Bammer in 2017
6 points vs Bammer in 2018
24 points vs LSU in 2017
16 points vs LSU in 2018

Wisconsin ended the regular season going 1st and Goal at the 5 to 4th and Goal from the 30 that resulted in an overthrow out of bounds! Anything will be better than that

Seriously, though, someone on this board did post that UNC had 19 more red zone TDs than Wisconsin this season. The two red zone efficiencies weren't far off from one another and, of course, Wisconsin's issue under the old staff was putting up points... Think most Wisconsin fans would sacrifice some efficiency in the red zone for more scoring opportunities.

In any case, Longo offenses in 2020-21 and 2021-22 ranked No. 19 (Tied) and No. 12 in red zone scoring percentage with Javonte Williams, Michael Carter and Ty Chandler. He'll have another NFL RB at Wisconsin, and a big one at that, so I don't think running the ball will be totally lost on him.

In 2017 they had DK Metcalf, AJ Brown, Demarkus Lodge, Van Jefferson and Dawson Knox with Jordan Ta’mu at qb who has bounced around the league as a backup and been the top qb in the newly pro start ups like the XFL.

Same guys in 2018 only losing Van Jefferson but adding Elijah Moore.

In no way that offense should’ve only scored 3 and 6 against Alabama regardless of how good Bama was.

Looks they are hiring away Minnesota’s DB coach and co-DC. Paul Haynes. He’s coached with both Fickell and Tressel before. Solid

Tressel is a good coach. Was part of some solid defenses at MSU under Dantonio.

I’m more excited about improvement in the offense than I am concerned about a falloff in the defense.

With Fickell and Tressel, we aren’t going to have a crappy defense.

Staffing updates. Most of these were poorly kept secrets

Mike Brown: WR and AHC

Colin Hitschler: Safeties and special teams

Gino Guidugli: TE and passing game coordinator

Jack Bicknell: OL

Have not seen OLB, DL, or RB coaches yet

Edit: sounds like Greg Scruggs is the DL target. Former Cinci DL coach, currently an assistant with the Jets

Don't worry, Longo does run the ball, he just does it very differently than traditional Wisconsin offense.

I think it's an upgrade, but I worry that the ceiling is capped by the simplicity of the offense.
