re: Why would OM announce this?

I think OM admin is doing everything they can to get into the playoffs and reap the financial gains that come along with that. If they let Lane go and they lose with the interim next week, it is highly likely that the committee would drop them from the playoffs citing that they are not the same team without Lane. Lane gives them the best chance to win and secure the playoffs. If they lose with Lane, then they can make the case about distractions and try to convince the committee that an interim coach would right the ship for the playoffs.

Right I think he is leaving but wants to finish the season, they were trying to force him into a decision this week and he didn’t let them.

He should just leave and not look back. If thats his decision.
Look ahead, not back. I know it is hard, but if he waits till January to join LSU, then next year is a complete disaster, and he loses positive momentum.
Doesn't seem to be much good to come out of remaining there, knowing hes leaving

Tell him to go? They can ask him, but can’t make him.

His responsibility is to Ole Miss and its fans. I think his statement was to stabilize things at home and signal to your fanbase and booster what’s going to happen this week.
It’s hard to keep all of that under wraps for the week, plus you would have your local media (On3, 247, YouTubers, etc) going crazy asking questions and prying for info. The national media will still be asking for info, but your home front people will move on to analysis and what’s next.

You have Clinton and MS in your screen name. Are you from Clinton, MS? I just ask because my wife is from there. We met at LSU in TGBFTL and she’s a big Tiger fan, as well.

No matter what the underlying motivation was, the delay creates risk for LSU. Kiffin will be subject to powerful influences and emotions over the next week, including potential pleas from Ole Miss administrators, his own players, and fans, not to mention the emotional upheaval of coaching his final game at Ole Miss while the playoffs are within grasp.
