Blog post on why Muschamp jumped ship..

quote:

A month ago we reported that as HCIW, Muschamp wanted input on the staff going forward and insisted that changes needed to be made. He fully backed the decision to can Greg Davis along with some other guys not so dearly departed.

It’s simple: Muschamp wanted coaches X,Y, and Z under consideration. Specifically Holgorsen. Actually, he wanted the head coaching gig now. He was ready to take over and fix the systemic problems plaguing Texas Football 2010. But Mack wasn’t going out on 5-7. And apparently he wasn’t willing to listen to Muschamp’s input on the new coaching hires. So Mack wanted coaches A, B, C. Muschamp called his bluff, tripled his salary in the process, and is headed back to his preferred conference. The same one that has won the last four BCS title games with a fifth likely on the way.

I got this off Shaggybevo.. apparently the author is somewhat of a Texas insider.

this "HC in waiting" is a crock. yea, it worked out at FSU but that is probably the exception. Jimbo also had a $5 mil clause in his deal. but to "hold" a guy indefinately for $900K a yr. ain't happening, not in this market. TU guys may think it kept him but they are deluding themselves (which is damn common with texas fans).

HCIW is a marvelous idea if there is a definite timeframe when the transition takes place. Jimbo was pretty much running things his second year at FSU. He knew the job was his and it proved to be a brilliant hire if you look at FSU recruiting classes the last couple of years and their on-field success this season. There is no telling when Mack Brown will step down. Taking HCIW for UT is about as dumb as HCIW for Penn State.

Agreed. It was a better situation in Jimbo's case because they agreed on a date in which Jimbo would take over and if they didn't let him take over by that year, he'd get a couple of million.

I suspect he was offered the Tennessee job last year and he passed on it. And the Auburn job the year before. Although I am a little surprised he jumped at this situation following Meyer.

I think there was also the fear that Texas could be even worse next season and possibly at that point the university would clear the whole house and not just Mack.

I think Muschamp saw the potential to be out of a job next season so why the hell not take a head coaching job now.

Muschamp's star was falling in that he and Mack lost control of the team this year, his defense sucked with the best talent in the US, bad shite going down in Austin, and FL is a great job available now.Easy decision for him. Easy.
