Was he the head coach at Alabama for that 2016 title? If yes, it counts.
If not, then it most certainly does not count. Derrick Ansley and Brent Key were also assistants on that staff - I guess that qualifies them as candidates for the LSU head coaching job as well.

Anonymity in major college football is virtually non existent. Out of left field hires won't happen because of Agents and leaks. There's really a very limited talent pool that can handle being a SEC HC. Look at the one's vociferously denying rumours, and the surprise hire will generally emerge.
