In today's football with offenses moving to heavier passing offenses I think a 3-4 or a 3-3-5 both have advantages over a base 4-3.

It’s important that your defense understands one concept prior to installing multiple fronts. Also, what did BK run at ND?

Those are Nickel packages that the 3-4 utilizes.
You basically build defenses around 2 base packages:
4-3 & 3-4.
Everything as far as personnel grouping choices is stemmed off those bases.
So, "they run a 3-4" USUALLY means their base defense is 3-4 but they are going to run different personnel groupings (245/425/335/155/326/317, etc) off what the offense is putting on the field.
Now, I said USUALLY a 3-4 is only referring to the base that the defense is built/recruited by but sometimes they actually have a 3-4 on field because of what the offense has on the field.

3-4 seems to basically be what all the top defenses run nowadays...I know Saban puts a huge premium on those versatile hybrid LBs on the edge in his.
