Where do top P5 schools find their head coaches? From coordinators and G5 head coaches

Note: I posted this several weeks ago, before there was a Coaching Changes board and before Orgeron was fired. I think it is worth reposting here
Methodology: There are 64 Power 5 conference Teams and two major independents. For the sake of this thread, I am considering these 66 teams as the upper echelon "P5" schools.
Of these teams, the below 24 teams are what I consider the highest level of the highest level. These schools, based on budgets, competitive levels of play, stadiums, etc., are the best of the best.
Sure there are some arguments to be made about who should be on this list, but I think most people could agree on the top 20. Probably BYU, Iowa and Virginia Tech are the fringe teams.
So where do these schools get their coaches from?
Overwhelmingly, P5 coordinators or G5 head coaches.
Only 3 of 24 were hired as a head coach from another P5 program, and only 1 (Jimbo Fisher) was from a "high level" P5 program.
Only two, LSU and Clemson, were position coaches. There are three former NFL head coaches.
What does this tell us? Not much that we didn't already know -- that it's a crap shoot. That going into it being "for" or "against" a certain coach because of where he is currently coaching is not smart.
Where did their current coach come from:
Independent
Notre Dame (G5 head coach)
BYU (P5 coordinator)
Pac 12
Oregon (P5 coordinator)
Washington (P5 coordinator)
USC (P5 coordinator)
UCLA (NFL head coach)
Big 12
Oklahoma (P5 coordinator)
Texas (P5 coordinator)
Big 10
Ohio State (P5 coordinator)
Michigan (NFL head coach)
Penn State (lower level P5 head coach)
Nebraska (G5 head coach)
Iowa (NFL coordinator)
ACC
Clemson (P5 position coach)
Florida State (G5 head coach)
Miami (P5 coordinator)
Virginia Tech (G5 head coach)
SEC
Georgia (P5 coordinator)
Tennessee (G5 head coach)
Florida (lower level P5 coach)
Alabama (NFL head coach)
Auburn (G5 head coach)
LSU (P5 position coach)
Texas A&M (High level P5 head coach)
Note: If there is an error in this, please let me know and I will correct it.

Just examining your list of G5 coaches
Notre Dame (G5 head coach) - Who had been to 2 consecutive NY6 bowls the year before hired. Got the team on NCAA probation, and forfeited 2 years of wins
Nebraska (G5 head coach) - Came with a .731 winning percentage. Thats not looking so good right now. 15-25 currently
Florida State (G5 head coach) - Another 'hot guy' name. Came with a .717 winning percentage. 5-10 currently
Virginia Tech (G5 head coach) - Average coach, who hasnt won a conference title or took a team to a NY6 or playoff in 5 years
Auburn (G5 head coach) - Came with a great resume. Some success in 1st year, but has Ole Miss, A&M, and Bama to come
Tennessee (G5 head coach) - Decent G5 resume, but is just average in his 1st year, and has Bama, KY, and UGA in his next 3 outings
So it looks like the G5 route is not the route to go, if your fans expect immediate success

So the route to go must be a P5 head coach, right?

You should also put that the G5 ND coach had CONSISTENT success at multiple stops before getting to ND same as Urban when he got to UF
First time G5 coaches jumping immediately to a P5 top program haven't had success at all
Petersen and Tressel you can point as the only outliers but Petersen was at Boise for 10 yrs going 92-12 with multiple BCS bowls
And Tressel was at YSU for 14 years going 138-56 winning 4 D1-AA titles.
Napier is 1-4 against ranked opponents with his best bowl game at Lending Tree.
He needed another 3/4 yrs of consistent success or go to a lower P5 and have success first.

Youngstown State is not G5, they are FCS.
I would say Matt Campbell (Toledo) has been successful at Iowa State.
However I think the main thing illustrated by this list is that there is no guaranteed path, to success or failure. There have been successful coaches from every path.

This won’t blow up because there’s no ridiculous claim or thing to argue, but this is a solid post. If we hire away one of the many P5 coaches on the list, it would be a rare instance of that happening.
