When they have one agreed to a contract

Did McNeese fire Frank? Would he really leave a HC job to come back as an assistant?

Kelly ghosted everyone on the way out and pissed off his own assistants.
I don't think this is accurate. He extended job offers to several of them and had a team meeting to face everyone in person.
I'm sure there was a short time where his coaches couldn't get in touch with him and it's very possible this was for legal and ethical reasons. You might not be aware of this, but his attorney was with him at the time he resigned from ND and accepted the LSU job. Once he accepted the LSU job, it was probably right that he temporarily cut off contact with his staff at ND.

There is a reason. They think they're part of something special this season at Notre Dame and they're busting their asses to put up a united front for the selection committee.
I don't think Freeman or the S&C coach were ever going to come with him, but by the accounts I read, Rees was strongly considering it. And who knows, after this weekend if they're not in the playoffs, some of those guys might actually decide to make the move. Or maybe guys come after the bowls.
I'd wager the staff stuff would be playing out a lot differently if ND didn't have a chance at the playoffs. I doubt they would be rushing to give Freeman HC and once that piece of the puzzle is gone, it's easy to see other guys wanting to look elsewhere, since a new HC picks his own staff.

i wouldn't be shocked to see Kelly wait longer than we want to see how the final playoff lineup looks. I'd imagine that if Notre Dame is out, he could get some of those guys who are "staying" to join him. That said, he's proven to make good hires. So, he can do whatever and we will have to see how it shakes out.

Sources say Kiffin reached out about being the OC for LSU.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by this.
I'm really surprised ND is going to go with Freeman and Rees as their top 2 guys, though. Freeman, obviously, had no head coaching experience and this is only Rees' second year as an OC.
I think either of those guys on their own (Freeman with an experienced OC or Rees with an experienced offensive minded HC) would be fantastic. But those guys together seem way too green for my liking.
And then their new DC is a guy who has only been a co-DC one year and that was 16 years ago.
This is a really really bold strategy and I'd be worried if I was ND.
The more I think about it, I'm starting to wonder if this structure is just for show for the selection committee and it falls apart of they don't make the playoffs.
I really have no clue what they're doing here, but Freeman, Rees and Elston seems like a huge gamble to me.
