Not at the time. A lot of people were pissed that LSU was hiring "that guy we beat in the Independence Bowl"

Yea, but this whole thread is about looking back on hirings in the SEC, not what people thought of them at the time.

I think that hire would be a tier below Saban/Rich Rod just because Utah is Utah.

It has gotten a little out of control. I was asking who, at the time of the hire, was:

1) A huge name
2) Mucho hype
3) Head coach experience

Oh, well that's not how I read it.

The answer to this is Saban to Alabama. Hands down.

Obviously Urban to Florida.

Steve Spurrier is definitely one that, at the time, people in South Carolina were flipping out about.

New England Patriots, who paid THREE #1 draft choices to get Bellichek from the New Jersey Jets.

At the time I thought it was the dumbest move ever.

I get 0% for that. He has made New England the premier franchise and he doesnt even pay top dollar for vets. He gets low end vets who can play a role. He has 2 #1's, 2 #2's and 2 #3's this draft.
This draft will make New England into the best of the best for years to come.

Nationally, I am not sure that hire had as much hype or big name as Rich Rod, but it is very close IMO.
