At the beginning of the season his defense gave up a lot of points but they seemed to settle down towards the end. He has produced some decent linebackers in the past and had a stint at Louisiana Tech for a short while.

Ehhh... I'm skeptical; I'll explain why. He's pretty damn consistent and never really has huge craters with his defenses on the scoring side. Really tough against the run... not so much the pass which is problematic based on the offenses we're playing week in and week out.

Now, my question is how much of that run defense, which would explain the better-than-pass scoring defense, is Charlie Partridge whom I consider a top-5 DL coach and probably should be a DC now or soon.

That's why I'm skeptical about Bates- I think statistic wise it's all Charlie.

Should we go for Partridge for DC? I wouldn't hate it, but no. He needs to have more experience at coordinating before taking that big of risk at LSU for CBK. Now one thing about him, however, he's also got a fair amount of experience coaching STs; he can do both DL/DC and STs.

Bates is widely respected as a DC and has been for 20 years.

But because he's not a hot name for the last 20 minutes, LSU fans don't want him.

His older brother Master Bates used to destroy the spread.
