A more established DC would want to run his own defense, not Saban's.
Fits Saban's mold of a young up and comer he can teach.
And if he works out he'll stick around for a while longer than the current 2-3 yrs. Saban sounds like he's "getting to old for this shite," so stability for the next 5 yrs is what he's searching for I'm sure.

Saban has never hired an established DC long term, at least since coming to the SEC in 2000. Phil Elimissian was DC at LSU in 2000 but he was grooming Muschamp from 2001 onward. When he came to Alabama he was grooming Smart from 2007 onward. Promoting him to DC in 2008.
Coaching staff stability is something he’s never had. Guys are leaving every year. I don’t think there’s been one season in 11 years at Alabama where there wasn’t at least 2 new assistants.

I get that, but the dude is retiring at some point. 5 or so yrs is about it. Like I said the guy is sounding tired of dealing with main coordinators with their minds somewhere else instead on the playoffs. The way he handled kiffin looked bad, so his style would be "F this i'm gonna get someone young that in no way will be ready to be a HC for 4-5 yrs min". If he pans out. If anything bama better look at how ou did the stoops transition or bama is opening themselves a can of hurt. Ala UT, and uf. HC environment has drastically changed the last 10 yrs.
2000 Saban is way different than 2018 Saban.

The 2015 transition with Smart was good.
The 2016 transition with Kiffin wasn’t.
We have to see how Pruitt reacts.
