re: UM's "request to speak" before Champ game classless?

Skip didn't have to make the phone call public knowledge..He could have told Miles and told him to keep the public out of it. I like what I see about the integrity of Miles. It would have been best for all concerned if the call had not been released.

I think it was. I just don't understand their reasoning other than to screw with us. What difference does 4 days make?
I don't think they wanted to screw with us, but I agree - what difference would 4 days have made?

Not classless. The request is a formality...they've been talking through agents for a while now.
Doesn't bother me a bit.

My friend thinks it was classless of Michigan to request to speak to Miles before the game
This story was floated in an attempt to slow down the news cycle and make it seem as if a deal were not already in place, when in fact it has been in place for several weeks.
The news cycle was doing its thing this week and they ADMIN of LSU and MICH as well as Miles were grasping for anything to slow it down and keep the focus on SECCG.
The loss to ARK continues to have major rippling negative effects.
Miles has obviously lost the support of the ADMIN who obviously feel that the team was not well prepared for the ARK game and they very accurately blame Miles for that debacle.

I doubt UM waited this long to speak to him.

I don't see the problem with it. Now if LSU were in the MNC hunt I might have a different opinion but bottom line is Miles could have always said no.

No. They have their priorities and getting a top coach is more important to them than LSU winning the SEC. If it was such a big issue, LSU could have refused permission until after this weekend.

Miles has many allies at Mich. This contact has been going on at some level since he has been at LSU. It stepped up during the summer when it was speculated that Carr would retire. It kicked into high gear after the Appalachin State Game.
No one has told me any of the above. I am my own source. But, I guarantee you that no one can refute it.

i think it is fishy...classless no
the 2 words classless and overrated are the two most overused and misused words in sports today

Well stated and absolutely true.

No, not classless just Selfish. MI is not worried about LSU's Program....
AND- Neither will LSU worry about who it contacts and hires out from under another University.
I think LSU will hire/offer someone off the radar, just from past examples (no insider info) and they will likely stay after seeing the precedents of Saban's Failure at Miami/Bama and Miles future failure at Michigan.
The Coaching world just got stirred up today, I believe that LSU is a better job than MI from a winning standpoint and a talent standpoint.
Even Army has "more tradition" than LSU or MI for that matter, but tradition can't win games, just ask Charlie Weis...or Miles in two years.

Well said NCat.

Up here in Ohio, these Bucknut fans are actually excited about the prospect of Miles coahing at UM. It's a whole different perspective on things.

Miles has some allies and some detractors. Players, fans, some former coaches are gung-ho on him. But many powerful alums are anti-Miles. They want the Schembechler era to end, not another caretaker of that legacy. Who will Martin and Mary Sue Coleman listen to?
Just to be correct, the University knew Carr was leaving last Jan. after the USC loss. Car is ill and told them he was retiring right then. They asked him to stay. Why?
Well, Hart, Henne, Long and Manningham would likely have left for the NFL draft, the in-coming class would have been blown up, Mich would have to get the leftovers from last season's coaching swap-meet -- meaning this would be a program needing considerable rebuilding just to get to average. And...in two months they were asking the Board of Regents for $280 million to upgrade Mich Staduim. How might that have gone with the program in shambles. So they asked and Carr stayed.
It may have been rumor in the summer. But it was fact inside the program for nine months at the start of the season. Ap. St. or no Ap. St. Carr was through as HC at Mich. nine months before the season started, he physically can't do the job anymore.
What is really curious is that it was only rumored during the summer, and then still only rumor during the season, but it was absolute fact well before that and Mich kept their business in-house. So what does that say about people knowing/thinking/speculating what they are doing in this coaching search. To me it says what you see, what you think you see may not be what you get.

Totally classless. Here's why. There is no other school that stands a chance of hiring Les. There will be no competition. The request does not speed up the process at all. There was simply no good reason to do it this week under these circumstances.
Posted on 11/30/07 at 9:57 am to GeauxBlue
At this point, I'd rather be dealing in reality than speculation. No problem here.

Maybe the interview, at an unspecified time after the SEC CG, is just a professional courtesy. Maybe they are just letting Les, as a Mich Man, know face-to-face that he is not the guy. After all, Mich did not say Miles was a candidate, LSU has not said he is a candidate, heck even Les has not said he is a candidate, and his agent has not said he is a candidate. Only the media says he is a candidate. And they aren't hiring anyone!!

It was LSUs AD who chose to make an announcement to the press-it is strictly his fault if the request to speak to Miles (which is a courtesy on Michigan's part) causes LSU to be less focussed for the game.
Our AD has conducted this search very honorably.

Glenn327, please understand that our AD has to use whatever means necessary to set up the SKIM.
You see the baseball camp money thing dried up.
