Meh. 66 y/o.

Should have gone with a younger guy.

But it's UMASS, whatever.

He got ran out on a rail by Michigan folks for being too stubborn and rigid...Apparently, he only ran man to man coverage and slants were a big deal around there...Lol he just couldn't stop the slants.

He did a really good job there the first time. Although in fairness they were still FCS. It’s a much tougher job now.

They tried that with Walt Bell and that turned out to be a disaster.

Best Don Brown stat is that he was the Yale interim baseball coach in 1992 and took them to a regional

True.

I guess it depends on the candidate(s). UMASS feels like a place you have to sell hard. Like get a staff full of social media wizards and do some unique things.

Then take a chance on someone like Brennan Marion (Pitt), Garrett Riley (SMU), Rhett Lashlee (Miami), Graham Harrell (USC), Zach Arnett (Miss St)...someone like that.

But you're right, Brown did well there back in the day. 66 y/o though? Feels like a tough task for him to rebuild the foundation at that age.

A 67 year old to start a rebuild might not be the best decision

I saw this movie already with Randy Edsall. It didn’t end well.

Arizona pushed to keep Brown as its defensive coordinator, offering him a two-year contract that would have made him the highest-paid assistant coach in the Pac-12, according to a source.

Brown opted to return to UMass, where he was the head coach from 2004-08.

Maybe but his heart must be in it if he turned down a fat raise for a far less stressful gig at Arizona.

I doubt he’s there to rebuild it. He’s just the stop gap. Someone who knows what they are doing to come in for 2-3 years and stabilize it and get it pointed in the right direction. Then, they go hire their guy. Or that’s how I would do it
