Scoop is reporting that Mark Hudspeth, OC of MsSt is high on the list at ULM for HC. Gunter Brewer who is OC at OkSt. They are really hush-hush. Anyone know anything????

if I was ULM I would hire a great FCS school coach or get a good divison 2 head coach. Instead of 2 coordinators at Divison 1 school.

They cannot afford anyone that I know of. They may get one of the previous HCs from Nicholls. McNeese has a young coach who might get paid less, but who would leave a great winning program for ULM??? Mumme just failed at NMS which is like ULM ...no money. What is worse, the money for the staff is so limited,too. It will probably be a pay cut for these 2 OCs, but they really want to become HCs. Price they have to pay.

Perhaps ULM needs to return to being a FCS school so that they will be more within their own budget.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with FCS or I-AA football. Plenty of players in that subdivision go on to the NFL. It is quality, competitive football. I remember growing up on Bayou Desiard about a mile away from ULM or then-NLU. Saturdays were always a busy and exciting time. Playing teams like Northwestern State, McNeese, Stephen F. Austin, and Central Arkansas really brought the people to the games and made for good football. The NLU-Tech game was huge in Louisiana, definitely the best game in the state outside of LSU. Now there is no buzz, no excitement. I thought when ULM moved up to FBS that the two schools would play each other again but that appears to be subbornly out of discussion. They are simply not giving the people what they want to see. Moreover, they are forced to play these money games against teams they have no business playing just so they can balance the books. I think the financial situation has actually gotten worse since the move to FBS. FBS is more competitive from a money perspective and ULM simply cannot compete.

If they go back to FCS they might actually get back to being able to beat someone. Winning has a way of curing a lot of things, not to mention it helps put fans in the stands. I also remember when NLU was 1-AA and things were a lot better back then. One might also consider how getting the shite beat out of you can demoralize a team. This FBS thing was some of Lawson Swearingen's bullshite while he was president of the university - a position that he was soundly unqualified to fill. The damage to the athletic program is a piece of much more damage done by this idiot. Much of that damage has been undone. The same needs to happen to the athletic program and specifically the football team.

I believe they beat this year's SEC & probable National Champion just 2 short years ago.

A fluke win. That does not mean they can compete weekly with the big boys. Who have they beat since of any standing?

ULM took a look at the money that came in after they won the title in 88( I think that was the yr) and they had maybe an extra 500k. They wanted to move up to get more money. If you look at the campus back then it was awful. It had to be about the ugliest one I have ever seen. Now it looks good. They drop big bucks to move the pharmacy school to it's own place. They got rid of most of the dorms and have gone to apt style res life (like ECA and WCA). The big problem is that ULM is a commuter school. It's very hard to build a winning program when your students go home for the weekend and have no reason to come back for a game.

Granted, Northeast has always been known as a suitcase college. However, there were a hell of a lot more fans in those stands when they were winning in 1-AA (FCS). I was still attending some of their ball games at the time, whenever LSU was playing out of town.
In terms of the campus fix up, the football upgrade had nothing to do with that. The current ULM President had to get bond money to overhaul the campus, which was needed. However, the move to 1-A was one of Lawson Swearingen's moves. The guy was an idiot as a university president and really should not have had the position at all since he did not have a terminal academic degree. While he had a J.D., the Juris Doctorate is a professional degree and not considered an academic research based degree such as a Ph.D. or Ed.D. Many of the faculty were quite vocal about this. However, Buddy Roemer pushed him anyway via the Board of Regeants.
