re: The REAL reason Les is asking for an 8 win clause

Choctaw. Ya killing me. Miles is mediocre and those programs I mentioned are happy with mediocrity. 8 wins to them is like winning the super bowl. 8 wins here means big drop in revenue.

Second, let's imagine you are correct: Miles just wants informal "assurances" from the AD. How the hell would you enforce that? If Miles goes 8-4/7-5 next season and LSU fires him, what would Miles do, exactly? Whine that LSU broke its promise? Cry?
Miles wouldn't do anything, but he knows that even the verbal assurance is worth something because of the position it would put LSU in when trying to attract the next coach.

I don't think has anything to do with contract language. More of a mutual understanding type of thing. I think miles just wants Alleva to be on the same page as him and feel that he has the backing of the athletic department. The 8 win season argument is just symbolizing what a down season would be to Les and that those happen throughout a coaches tenure. He wants the athletic administration to see beyond that and realize that he can right the ship when things go wrong. He has already turned it around once since that disastrous '08 season. The foreseeable future looks pretty bright under Les. I think he knows this, but he wants the full backing and confidence of the administration too. This is my opinion.

You guys are weak, Miles needs to decide if he wants to be LSU's coach or MI coach, period. Two 8 win seasons in a row and everyone including you will be calling for his head b/c 8-4 guareentees the Indy bowl. Move own Miles its apparent that MI is home for you and BR will never be that place.
This is the exact reason he would even have to ask for such a clause.
What if Miles wins the title next yr, we graduate JJ, Lee, Ridley etc and the Mettenberger tears his ACL in practice. Then somehow, Miles pulls 8 wins out of his arse. Damn good year if we have a true freshman starting at QB. 08 wasnt pretty, but given the circumstances.

I think you're grossly overestimating the value of "honor" when compared to four million dollars a year, a fertile recruiting base, a premiere conference, and the chance to win national titles. It's all of the latter that would coax a new coach into coming here, not some quaint notion of "integrity." Florida had no problem hiring Myer after they dumped Zook. Bama got Saban after they casually discarded Shula.
It's all about the money and the opportunity to win.
All in all, this notion that LSU should relinquish it's right to assess its coach on an annual basis in crazy. You can't formally or informally "guarantee" a coach his employment.

who said we're going to win 8 games a year? He's won 8 games ONCE since he's been here. WTF is wrong with you people?
also...since when is having 4 11 win seasons in 6 years mediocre?

The fact that we are even discussing this shows how spoiled of a fan base we have become.

I just think this whole idea of a 8 win clause and how it is being discussed is internet bullshite.
This.
8 wins is just an arbitrary number that someone used and everyone has run with it. It's the principle of what was conveyed in the other thread that should be the focus, not the details. And I can't disagree with the principle.

Thanks for adding some common sense to this subject. You have spelled it all out pretty nicely.

He wants an 8 win clause so he can coast and only win 8 games for eternity
Right. I am exactly sure that is what he is going to do.

Because they read it here. Duh!
Someone has taken something that was said out of context and it has ballooned into a mess around here.

give the man what he wants...swallow your pride as an AD...this isn't about your or Les. Its about us. Les has given us a lot over the years and that is some honor. If not, you better get Nick Saban back!
