The Chahlie Mac syndrome

I can't help but notice how much Les Miles reminds me of Charlie Mac's time here as coach of LSU, albeit with more success of course. Charlie also followed a phenomenal and much beloved coach who left for greener pastures in Paul Dietzel as Les did with Nick Saban. And Charlie just couldn't please many of the LSU fans who kept clammoring to "Help Mac Pack" because he couldn't beat Bear Bryant's Alabama, as if many did back then.
Well Mac did eventually leave, and the LSU coaching roller coaster began with a bang, eventually culminating in the dark ages of LSU football under Coach Curley H*llm*n. The funny thing is, we still didn't beat Alabama at home until Nick Saban finally got here some 21 years later and a little success sprinkled in here and there, but nothing really that much more substantial than when Mac was leading the Tigers.
So, I would say this to my fellow Tiger Fans. Be careful in what you wish for. I don't necessarily think that Les leaving will end with LSU going through another dark ages of football, but while things can always get better, they can also get worse. Often times, a Les in the hand is better than a so called "Up and Comer" in the bush.

a lot of universities have a legendary coach. we don't. i always thought that miles had the perfect oportunity to become lsu's legend. however, he may choose to go to michigan and NEVER become a legend like bo.

Except that Miles can actually beat Saban (2-2) and Meyer (3-3). 
And I agree with you. Miles is a much better coach than most will give him credit for.

Tell you what's also crazy...
Nick Saban brought LSU back to prominence in the SEC two days after Charlie Mac passed away when he won the SECCG which began LSU's move to the top of the pack in the conference as a powerhouse. There's some real irony in that for me.

I had forgotten that. Yeah, ironic as hell. Overall I liked Coach Mac. A real gentleman, and class act.

Yeah, he really was, and I did as well. And more than anything, Charlie LOVED LSU as much or more than any coach since until perhaps Les, who also seems to LOVE LSU and this area. And with Les, as with Charlie, I don't doubt it when he says that he does. There's some real sincerity in there.

When somebody reads a History of LSU Football book in 40 years they are going to say wow they were really good under Miles. Because we live here and are so passionate about LSU it's hard to see what it 's all about W's.

And considering just what he was able to do this year at 11-2 with two of the worst QBs in production that I've seen in a really really long time here at LSU, it's amazing we aren't referring to LSU as Hogwarts, and Les as Harry Potter.
Pretty stellar job when you get down to it. Not without some incredible bumfuzzles in coaching, but in the end, it's still 11-2, and a lot of coaching went into pulling an 11 win season out of this group.
Tiger Fans need to face the facts... With all of his antics, his public speaking issues, his clock management issues, and other things, he's still a very good coach, and the proof is in the pudding...11-2, 11-2, 12-2, 8-5, 9-4, 11-2.
NOBODY, not one coach in LSU's illustrious history has EVER compiled such a record of winning seasons, and while people can speak about one SEC Championship in those years, he's also won a National Championship and has LSU on the top of the College Football World almost every single year.
