The boom of Dead money in college sports

ESPN
Ironically this article does not specifically mention LSU (except Bo Pellini) or Orgerons "dead money"
Bo knows dead money
quote:
According to an ESPN analysis of financial records of athletics departments at public universities, FBS programs spent more than $533.6 million in dead money in an 11-year period from Jan. 1, 2010, to Jan. 31, 2021. That's money those programs owed coaches in football and men's and women's basketball who were fired without cause with time left on their contracts. The severance payments were made over several years or, in a few cases, in one lump sum.
quote:
Remarkably, the dead money total is actually much more than that. The financial records did not include payments for many of the coaches who were fired during or after the 2020 football and 2020-21 basketball seasons. In football alone, FBS schools committed another $107.6 million in severance pay before mitigation to fired coaches and their staffs in 2020.
Ironically this article does not specifically mention LSU (except Bo Pellini) or Orgerons "dead money"
quote:
After receiving $6.5 million upon his dismissal from Nebraska in 2014, Pelini picked up an additional $4 million after one season as LSU's defensive coordinator in 2020.
Bo knows dead money

Is this where we pretend that the schools are footing these buyout bills directly so we can clutch pearls that it’s irresponsible?

Exactly.
I saw that article and thought, "Who gives a frick?".
This is just another opportunity for ESPN to attempt to push an agenda.

ESPN is a commie organization but this is a legitimate topic.

How so?

Because teams will eventually be forced to pay player’s directly. It’s coming within the next 15 years, so Universities better figure out how to stop paying coaches dead money so they can pay the athletes

No abounds like one of the best worst coaches in FBS. Getting paid 10.5 Mill to go away!

Don't think universities will ever have to directly pay athletes for football
They can't immediately go pro and CFL or Europe isn't a great option
Unless NFL changes its own rules where you have to be 3 years removed from high school
Maybe they'll get a stipend but it'll likely be capped pretty low I imagine or group of 5 sports will not be financially viable

No it's the thread where we talk about a bunch of idiots wasting dead money in college sports on inflated salaries and stupid buyouts. There's about 3 coaches in college sports that deserved any of it.

Predicted this in 2006 with the initial Saban deal.Back then his deal represented a ridiculous sum....now it's the floor and because of TV revenues these schools with their deals with conferences don't seem to have problem with it. As a business model it is questionable in terms of prudence. Pelini making out like a mutha fukker
