We are 6-6 right now. We and have our melt-downs when we lose and we get back up pissed off. It happens a lot if you have been an Ag in recent history. CS is easy to get around in and the traffic is a lot better than a lot of cities and is lot cleaner as well. Recruiting is in the eye of the beholder, and everyone has their place where they end up. Winning is the ingredient that most fans want most. As far as our new coach goes… I think he will have a lot to prove going in the SEC west.

I love how people just go around looking for reasons to bring race into things. Weren't we have supposed to have moved past that by now?

I feel we're at a point in college football where winning is #1. The media loves the race card for stories, but universities are about the cash.

Good hire IMO. Excited for TAMU Vs. LSU football. First game I attended in Tiger Stadium as a kid was against TAMU. Awesome stuff!

Could care less who or what variety of minority A + M hired.

I'm looking forward to seeing the Aggie Band at halftime in Tiger Stadium.....

Who gives a flying rat turd about what race the man is? If he's a good coach then he is a good hire. I hate it when the media says it's a shame there aren't anymore black coaches in the SEC. The schools hire the best coaches regardless of race.

A&M gets a rap as "unfriendly" and so on because the student body is only 3% black while the State is, I don't know, but a lot higher percentage. Enlightened UT, on the other hand, is almost 4% black... much, much more diverse.

The truth is that both schools are populated mostly by upper middle-class suburban white kids driving Daddy's SUV and scaring the shite out of me on my commute home.

It's largely irrelevant anyway as athletics tends to segregate from the rest of the school. My cousin ran track here in the early to mid 90s. I'd go to parties with him, and they were usually 90+% track people... colossal assholes for the most part. The football team was the same way back then, segregated, I don't know if they were assholes. I'm not sure about now.

This is not a good hire or a good fit. It is what happens when rich alums get to make decisions.

Step off campus and compare Autin or Houston demographics to Bryan/College Station...that is where you many minorities notice the big difference.

B/CS population demographics more closely resemble the makeup of the US than any other area, according to a recent study. FWIW, most black people I went to A&M with ended up loving the school and the area.

That's a great argument if the area surrounding UT's campus was as racially diverse as the rest of the city. However, it's been completely gentrified, like most hip, urban areas in this country. Ignoring that, I don't think that this data is what you were expecting. I moved to Bryan seven years ago because I'd gotten sick of the 20 somethings who skew the College Station numbers.

per Wikipedia:

Houston - 51% White, 26% non-Hispanic white, 44% Hispanic, 24% black, 6% Asian

Austin - 68% white, 49% non-Hispanic white, 35% Hispanic, 8% black, 6% Asian

Bryan - 65% white, ??% non-Hispanic white, 28% Hispanic, 18% black, 2% Asian

College Station - 81% white, ??% non-Hispanic white, 10% Hispanic, 5% black, 7% Asian

I live in Copperfield. The Freebirds on University at the bypass is only about 4 miles away, and most of that is 60 mph highway.

Can you believe TAMU hired a black head coach?

And can you believe a black HC took his first "big time program" job at A&M?

From the Presser: "I know you want to be seen just as a good coach, but how do you feel about being the first black coach at A&M"

Sumlin:
"Ive had a lot of firsts, we broke a lot of records at UH. Hopefully in 5 years, that wont matter. I hope any success I have will stand on its own. I try not to bring that up, in media, in recruiting, etc, Media focuses on that I don't,... I didn't come here to lose."

Well played Seriously though, there is a (slowly) growing black presence @ A&M, especially in the Corps.

I this the similarities to this and sly croom will be similar in how it's handled and wins.

I don't get the comparison between Croom and Sumlin at all, other than race. Two very different coaches, with two very different approaches.

Sumlin is in far better shape to win at TAMU than Croom was at State.

Amazing how susceptible some folks are to the agenda driven misinformation propagated by the national media.

Here's a newsflash, being a conservative does not make you a racist.
