and hear is a devout one at that.. he is a mid west guy..
imho, if he can go to ND and turn it around in 2-3 years and win a NC (and continue to do so for a decade) he would be a pretty good candidate for GOAT

And I lived ON the LSU campus for 9 years, lived near the campus for 17 years and am an LSU alum; my sister lives right by the LSU campus and has for 20 years now. Does that mean that I know any more than anyone else about the inner workings of the LSU AD office?
If THIS is your rationale, you are slow even by Bammer standards.

“I fully intend to be at Oklahoma for a long while,” he declared Monday afternoon.
The Internet- and Chicago-based reports he was interested in Notre Dame?
“I can’t help what’s said,” Stoops replied. “But I couldn’t be more excited and pleased with what we’re doing here and what the future holds...
“I intend to be at Oklahoma. I will never confirm or deny things I talk to with anybody. And I won’t be interviewing for any jobs.”

Who gives a frick? ND is a graveyard for coaches anyway.
They have been making wrong hires. It is not a graveyard. It is actually a great job to have. Recruiting kind of does itself. Imagine if they had Stoops or Saban or Kelly going to kids homes and letting them know all games are televised. Each home game is on national tv.

Analyst Says Bob Stoops Will Coach Notre Dame
by Bryan Kelly Correspondent

A writer from the Notre Dame Scout page is reporting that Bob Stoops and the Notre Dame athletic department have agreed verbally to the principles of a contract , and that if Notre Dame can meet his financial requirements, Stoops will take over as head coach of the Fighting Irish as early as this week.
The writer, whose original article is behind a Scout paywall , cited confirmation from five different sources, both neutral and affiliated with Notre Dame and/or Stoops, all of which have confirmed the existence of a verbal contract.
The only matter delaying the decision is financial, the source said.
Notre Dame must pay the remaining five years of salary to outgoing coach Charlie Weis, who was fired earlier today according to the New York Daily News.
Stoops is the highest paid coach in the Big 12, making over $4 million in salary, bonuses, and incentives. Oklahoma extended his contract through 2015 earlier this year.
Stoops denied interviewing for the position in a text message to Tulsa World columnist Dave Stitler, but the source claimed that Stoops and the ND administration have met and negotiated a contract through a third party, therefore precluding the need for an interview.
This would seem to coincide with Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick's assertion that there are no current or ongoing interviews for the position; Stoops' record, for all intents and purposes, speaks for itself.
There was indication that Stoops would take over for Notre Dame in time for bowl preparation. The decision to play in the postseason was left up to the players, who will meet and vote on the fate of the team today, according to Swarbrick.
Notre Dame went 6-6 on the year, including consecutive losses to Pitt, UConn, and Stanford to close the season.

What I can guarantee you, is that if this ND job stays open past Saturday, Nick Saban will get a raise/extension out of it. He nickel and dimed the hell out of us when he was here and this is one of the few jobs that is big enough to get his name mentioned.

Okay, let's assume this is true. WHO takes over at OU? That's a pretty high profile job right there in itself. Do they go after a guy like Patterson or Kelly, or promote from within?

I think you are underestimating Notre Dame. Any great coach can turn that program around in 1 year. It is a recruiting dream job for the right PROVEN college coach.
