Clemson’s Chris Chancellor intercepted Blake Mitchell, who was throwing deep to Kenny McKinley. On the next series, Ryan Succop’s punt was blocked by Nelson Faerber and returned by La’Donte Harris 10 yards for a touchdown to give Clemson a 10-0 lead.
Two weeks ago against Florida, Mitchell fumbled the ball after a bad exchange from center on the first play and Succop had a punt blocked, which led to Tim Tebow 22-yard touchdown pass to Cedrick Faison.
Succop had another punt blocked in the third quarter. Chris Culliver also struggled on a kickoff return when he fielded a kick and his momentum carried him in the end zone, giving USC the ball at the 1-yard line.
“We are just not real good and we’re not coached real well, which is my fault,” USC coach Steve Spurrier said.

Fifth consecutive loss humbles Spurrier

COLUMBIA — As the 2007 season began spiraling into the abyss, Steve Spurrier started to look every bit of his 62 years.

Back in August the Head Ball Coach was in full Florida Gator mode, smacking while he talked and talking a little smack, boldly predicting that his team was ready to compete with the best of the best in the Southeastern Conference.

Then came Vandy 17, USC 6; Tennessee 27, USC 24; Arkansas 48, USC 36; and Florida 51, USC 31.

He hadn’t felt this old since he was 42 — and coaching his first season at Duke. That was the only time he had lost four consecutive games as a college boss until the 2007 campaign.

Suddenly the bags under his eyes seemed more pronounced, and his patented rapid-fire-talking was replaced with a more deliberate — almost apologetic — tone.

He was wrong about how far his team had come and how far it needed to go.

So what was left to salvage in a year that saw the Gamecocks freefall from No. 6 in the nation and atop the SEC East to a national and league also-ran?

Mostly pride.

And the Gamecocks showed plenty of pride, rallying from a 17-7 deficit to take a 21-20 lead and coming ever so close to stopping the bleeding with a victory over Clemson.

But Mark Buchholz’s 35-yard field goal as time expired gave USC a 6-6 season — and Spurrier his first five-game losing streak.

After it was over, the smacking was back and Spurrier seemed almost upbeat at times. But there was no doubt he was dazed by what had occurred.
Not just Saturday, but ever since an Oct. 20 loss to Vandy.

“That would’ve been a good one to win, to get two punts blocked and not stop a third-and-18,” said Spurrier, his patented sarcasm in tact. “If we could’ve gotten some punts off and stopped some plays, we would’ve won, but we didn’t and they did.

“That’s the way it happens two years straight at Williams-Brice. We get the lead and can’t hold it.”

The loss to their arch-rival capped a dramatic collapse for a team that seemed to have all the makings of SEC contenders through the first half of the season. It began with offensive struggles that set up losses to the Commodores and Volunteers, and then defensive lapses against the Razorbacks and Gators led to defeat.

Saturday night it was mistakes and miscues that doomed USC.

“We thought we’d win a few of ’em,” Spurrier said. “But we didn’t. We were competitive in this one at least. We’ve got to learn to stop the run. We’ve gotta do something or it’s going to be a long fall as they say.

“It just didn’t work out.”

Despite the disappointment, Spurrier said he was proud of his team’s effort. He singled out the play of wideout Kenny McKinley and quarterback Blake Mitchell, as well as the “scrappy” performance of his defense.

“I think the defense played about as well as it could play,” Spurrier said. “And (Clemson) helped us by missing a bunch of field goals. But we’re 6-6, and that’s where we’re at.”

Spurrier didn’t rule out the chances of a bowl bid for his team, either.

“We might get a bowl bid,” he said. “These guys have played hard and worked hard. If not we’re done at 6-6. We’ll just see.”

No Problem. I have just been hearing all Steve Spurrier is so superior to what we got and how we so need to hire him. IN fact he would be a perfect fit and he is the best Coach in the land. I thought a walk through the headlines of the last 24 hours might out thing in proper viewpoint.

Forgive me. I am not very good at Coach Bashing and I am a tad rusty at it. ALso since we are not bashing LSU Coaches the rant might be confused at what is going is on

I think you did a great job.

He can still coach, but do think a younger guy would probably be a better call, if the job should open up.

Bring on Orgeron........I hear he's no longer tied to a contract

No, I would rather have someone who is young and can adapt to modern football. I realize that vanderbilt and clemson are powerhouses and SC had no chance against them but, I just don't want spurrier.
