Agreed, but you'll have a difficult time convincing the old fans that we're not stuck in mediocrity
anymore and that this is an elite job.
no, but the older fans realize that these moves aren't without risk, and history shows (in all of college football) that a coaching search can quickly spiral down to 2nd tier choices. In addition, even some of your first choices may not pan out...Dan Hawkins, for example. That is why the "anyone but" position is foolish.

Once again, is Bob Toledo able to pay $500K for defensive coordinator and hire the likes of Bo Pelini and or John Chavis? It's really not that hard when you have money to play with. Miles figured that out with the the co-dc disaster.
You are trying to change the subject.
Do you think that recruiting would or would not suffer if Bob Toledo were named the head coach?
Do you think that LSU "recruits itself"?

In fact, Emmert left LSU because he grew up near Seattle, is a UW alumnus and being the Chancellor of UW was his dream job.
Ya really couldn't leave could he...What's his job now again?

Holding everything the same, recruiting loss would be minimal as of now. Now, if he doesn't hire a great staff and we lose a bunch of games, then that's a different argument. But yes, now LSU recruits itself for the most part. There's maybe 5 players a year where it's really a toss up.

The wrong hire will have its effect. Ask Michigan. Ask Miami.
Let's see:
Michigan hired a coach that runs a spread option completely different than the talent their team is built for and doesn't recruit both sides o the ball.
Miami stupidly promoted a coordinator within their program just like the did with Coker and basically got the same long term results. What a shocker.

I think LSU definitely "recruits itself" more than it did during what I'll call the pre-Saban/Emmert era. If Miles leaves and we don't land a top notch recruiter as a HC, we'll find out how much more.

How many games did Coker win?
How many games has Miles won?
Your comparision is entirely bogus.

I wasn't insinuating Les was bad with that you idiot. I was pointing out that in both cases, poor hires were made at those schools.
Miami hired Coker only to watch the team slowly get worse, an assitant under Davis.
When he was fired, they went cheap and hired from within again. The point is that they made the mistake of keeping on promoting guys from within a tumbling program.
LSU is not a team on the decline right now, although it may be headed that way, it's not that way yet.
Les would be leaving the team in pretty damn good shape, unlike both UM programs when their coaches were fired/resigned.

I assure you there is a fight for many more players than 5 every year. Not that other coaches won't recruit just as well...

quote:would suffer. however, we are in a position to get a much better coach than one of tulane fame. LSU can get a name guy and create some buzz, and everything will be fine. kids in louisiana still want to play for the tigers.

I'm not saying that it's easy to recruit. However, LSU has a wow factor to a high school kid looking to play D1 ball. No offense, that's not because of Les Miles. That's because it's LSU.

My apologies if I misunderstood.
The point is that if Miles leaves, not just anybody is going to be willing to follow him and the selection needs to be done with care.
LSU does not, I repeat does NOT, sell itself. There are a lot of schools with top notch facilities, a great tradition and a strong fan base. Most top level athletes are pretty savy and have knowlegable advisors.
Florida has all of the above and they had to settle for an unproven coordinator. If anybody thinks that he was their first or even second choice, they live in some never never land.
Like him or not if MIles leaves he won't be esy to replace.
And no Gruden ain't gonna be the one.
Now I have to leave fantasy land and take Buckwheat for his daily run.

virtually every kid LSU recruits visits schools that offer just as much, or more, in terms of "wow". If you look at the schools that are recruiting well, they are the top spenders, and they have the coaching staffs that are working the hardest. It's quite possible that the next staff will recruit just as well, but to simply say that recruiting is a given is naive. Otherwise we might as well fire Frank Wilson now, because I'm not sure he adds much in terms of on the field coaching.
