We are all trying to read between the lines here. But, I don't think you have it completely right.

My guess:

* Alleva wanted Jimbo
* Alleva and Jimbo's agent had a working idea of what it would take
* At some point, what it would take grew (at least once)
* At the same time, Herman assured LSU he was ready to jump on an offer
* LSU moved to the Herman side, and worked out an agreement in principle
* Herman changed his mind and said he wanted to hear out Texas (This was the writing on the wall)
* Alleva knew he was out of options and hired the only guy left on his list, Orgeron. He fast tracked the hire so that he could try and sell it as Orgeron being a top target who wanted the job...not that Texas swooped in and took LSUs candidate.
