Gary's about to enjoy some well deserved time off writing country music

why not get like a modern DC instead of some boomer who's been in the Big 12 his while life. offenses evolved. don't wait some old DC
Gary Patterson is one of the main architects of today’s modern defenses. I’m not advocating for him as DC, but give the man his credit.

We already tried the "retread" type coach with Bo Pelini and it did not work out so well.

My BIL (lives N. of FW) crosses paths with some influential people on occasion and will text me when he hears something interesting. Usually, just office conjecture and usually it's non-football related. But, he texted me the other day and said that his friend, who is close with Patterson, was in his office and said that he would be open to the DC job at Texas. He said that he is sick of the politics that come with being a HC and would like to just focus on defense.
It didn't make sense to me because Texas is one of the worst spots that you could work if you're someone who is sick of politics. But, based on that b.s. conversation, maybe he would actually be open to a DC role if the circumstances were right.

Patterson's wife is NOT related to the Bass family.
If Gary Patterson is indeed "set for life," it's because of his $6 million salary that he's been paid.
Why on earth would he want to jump back into coaching as a coordinator or assistant? He doesn't need the money, nor does he need the headache of recruiting.
My educated hunch is that he will sit out awhile and wait for somebody to contact him. Maybe no one will, and I think he'd be fine with that.
Here's what you need to know: Patterson didn't forget how to coach. His "system" isn't outdated. While playing in two offense-minded leagues, the Big 12 and the Mountain West, Patterson's defenses regularly ranked among the top 10 in the country.
TCU's replacement for him won't be better. It'll just be a replacement.
He'd be great as the LSU defensive coordinator, but I don't see it happening. If he did the same at Texas, that would make a teeny tiny bit more sense, since the Texas AD was Gary's former AD at TCU.
But again, why would he want to be an assistant coach?
