Respect for the Cloak of Darkness

We can't judge the overall success of the hire until the hire is made. However, we can judge the process. And that we (fans, media, trolls, etc) know exactly nothing so far into this thing is just amazing to me.
BR is about the most gossipy town I've ever lived in, and the AD has that place locked down like nothing I've ever seen.
I totally expected leaks (actual leaks from real sources) to start springing when it looked like the wheels were coming off this weekend. And still nothing.
So give some credit to SW over that. Dude is keeping a lid on it.
I think that's a good sign.

Half the posters think it's the exact opposite... a sign that the wheels have fallen off and Woodward can't even get unemployed coaches to take his call.

Unless he really wanted Riley (he did). Then, not only did he miss on his top guy at the last minute, he was used by USC as a smokescreen and as leverage by Riley and his agent for a bigger package, AND it was leaked and talked about non-stop for almost 2 whole weeks. So the only way this has been “kept quiet” is if you believe Riley wasn’t the target. In which case, I would disagree wholeheartedly.

I refute the leaked part. Not a single national writer gave Riley to LSU any credence. Not 1. The only “leaks” were on this board and this board only.

+1. The Riley "leaks" I saw were mostly BS from random posters. Maybe a few of them had some proximity to some of the financiers of this little adventure. It does look like some of those financiers were thinking it was LR, but who knows where they came up with that. I seriously doubt the AD was floating the shortlist by everyone who wrote a check. If so, there would have been a lot more out there for local media to pick up on.
None of the credible local or national media touched the LR to LSU story.

Because it got out of hand, and got LSU fans—and big check writing boosters—excited we were getting Riley. Woody can’t sell Brian Kelly—no matter how good he may wind up being—when you let it be teased that it was Riley. It just makes no sense to let everybody think the home run was in the bag only to wind up with a good coach, but one that’s not nearly as sexy as Riley. That only makes sense if it winds up being Saban, Dabo, or Urban. Anybody else—as good as they may be—will initially be disappointing to the fan base and probably the big money boosters. Because he let he rumors of Riley being a “done deal” get that far. He should have shut that shite down with the quickness if it wasn’t true.
By the way, I looked back at my posts, and I predicted Kelly on October 7th Seemed like a Woody-type hire. And I would have been ok with it. But he fricked up royally by letting the Riley rumors get so out of hand if that was never his guy. Just atrocious PR for your smokescreen to be forma guy who is considered universally better than the guy you wound up with.
