Ridiculous. In the first nine years after he was gone, LSU did a lot of things than Chollie couldn't do:

--won two SEC titles and should have been awarded a third but the title was vacated (McClendon won one SEC title in his 18 years as coach, none in his last nine years)

--went to two Sugar Bowls and one Orange Bowl (LSU's last major bowl appearance under McClendon was in 1973, six years before he was let go, and he made only two major bowl appearances in his last 12 seasons)

--had a better winning percentage than it had during the last nine years of McClendon's tenure (later revised by NCAA mandated forfeits of three wins by Mississippi State in 1974, 75 and 76)

--beat Alabama four times and tied them once (McClendon was 2-14 for his career and 0-9 in his last nine years vs. Alabama)

--had its first 10-win season and top 5 finish since 1961 (the year before McClendon became head coach, McClendon never won 10 games or finished in the top 5 in his 18 years as coach)

--had its best 5-year stretch, from 1984-88, since the mostly Dietzel-led stretch from 1958-62 (McClendon coached the final year of that stretch in his inaugural 1962 season)

LSU's program improved by nearly every measurable criterion after Cholly Mac was let go. And this was even in spite of the fact that the coach we hired to take over for him was killed in a plane crash a few months after he was hired, leaving us having to scramble for a last-minute replacement in Jerry Stovall.

It wasn't until 1989, a FULL DECADE after Mac was gone, that the program went down because of the disastrous hiring of Mike Archer instead of Steve Spurrier, who wanted the job, in 1987.

Considering the youth of LSU's team the timing seems right to bring in a better X and O guy to utilize the talent in place and continue recruiting interest.
