Exactly. The rumors could only hurt recruiting. Every team competing against OU for a recruit is 100% beating it in their head that he isn't committed to OU whether it is true or not is irrelevant. Fickell's name dropped quick and Riley's could have too if he wanted it to. The message in OP sounds like damage control.
