The two main idiots on here that constantly bashed Aranda are football ignorant.

We'll give up more big plays but also make more big plays. That's what happens with an "attacking style" defense

I think that’s the way to go. We gave up big plays last year. Any defense will, I think, because of the advancement of power 5 offenses. Force them to execute perfectly vs try to disrupt their execution. I think Venebles tried the latter, and was somewhat successful for a quarter and a half.

That’s the way I see it, but I don’t pretend to have any in-depth understanding of the chess match going on.

Nobody plays the 3-4 against the spread. Depending on opponent personnel, if they have 3 or more receivers, they're going to be in some kind of sub package with 5 or 6 DB's

The designated pass rusher is very often athletic enough to handle a TE or back for a short period of time or a small zone on a zone blitz.

The difference between a 3-4 and a 4-3 isn't all that much about personnel (certainly not as folks simplify it like you do here), but more about philosophy.

Leverage on a 3-4 is inside out - tends to be zone focused. 4-3 the leverage is outside in and is man focused.

We've always had the DBs to play a lot of man. The right guy calling the 4-3 is going to be as effective as the right guy calling a 3-4.

I'm a big fan of Dave Aranda. I think he was the best assistant coach in college football (despite never getting the Broyles, which tends to be a fashion thing lately) over the past 5 or 6 years.

Having said that, the best DC LSU ever had was Charles Youmans McClendon.

The only reason the defense fell short this season is because the offense was an absolute juggernaut and putting up 50 a game. That many possessions by opposing offenses is going to provide many more opportunities.

that argument is so hollow. great offense can contribute some to the defense giving up yds and points but not like we did to Vandy. Aranda never lived up the hype of pressuring opposing qbs.
