I suspect that several reasonably likely candidates weren't interested, mostly because of the specific details of this particular hire and not because of some "it's a crappy job" sentiment. From a potential HC's point of view, you see a program that is struggling, the fan base is testy, the AD is a lame duck, and you have no idea who your boss will be next year. Since the AD defines the expectations, you don't know what the expectations are either. In fact, the more I write, the worse it sounds....

This is how I see it. It's nothing against Freeze. But it is a shitty hire for the university. The fanbase is pretty much dead at this point. This hire will only divide it more than what it already is. We needed a good name that would pick this fanbase up and bring some excitement back to Oxford. It is a bad risk we are taking. Freeze won't be well accepted in Oxford and if falls on his face and drags us deeper into the hole...we may be be able to recover at that point. Just my opinion though.

It's shitty because Ole Miss had 4 weeks where they could have gotten somebody bigger. I still believe Pete Boone had something to do with this (behind closed doors) This was probably a hire that happened right after the firing of Nutt and we were just waiting on Freeze to finish to make the announcement. But once again, that is just my opinion.

I'm gonna let you Reb's handle this....If he actually thinks it can get worse than Nutt, after being warned and living it...He needs help!

Except for the Freeze not being excepted in Oxford bit. I know a lot of people who are already on the Team Freeze bus.

Yeah but there are also alot of other fans that aren't on that bus.

State's got a lot of momentum in its favor. A bad hire by UM could be pretty costly (assuming Mullen intends to stay at State).

Hopefully, the administration gives Freeze time. I can only imagine the horrible shape (talent wise) Nutt has left the team in.

Such is Ole Miss. The fan base would have been split no matter if we hired Leach, Fedora, Hudspeth, or Freeze. Smart would have been the only hire the majority of the fans would have gotten behind. But his time frame to talk is unreasonable to us. And best scenario for us is he becomes successful, leaves, and we're searching for yet another coach.

seriously....tons of OM fans scoffed at Fedora because he coaches at USM.

This thought is extremely unwarranted. We have a lot of good talent on this team. They're just undeveloped. A good staff should be able to see strong results in two seasons. Maybe one if the offense is gimmicky enough.

But i'm sure you're referring to him proving himself.

I'm talking about people scoffed at him because it's Southern Miss' coach that we're talking about. Nothing to do with actual results.

I guess we'll see what he can, but I won't hold my breath. Well anyway, I'm out. I have a job interview in morning at the medical center here. Wish me luck.

Just curious, IF Mullen does leave, would the State fan base be pumped about getting Hudspeth? Reason I ask is because that would be viewed as a really good hire for State because Hud went 8-4 at ULL. Meanwhile Ole Miss fans are up in arms about hiring Hugh Freeze (also a first year head coach in the Sun Belt) who went 10-2, won the conference championship, and beat Hud head to head.

UL had like 5-6 turnovers in that game. It was also cold and rainy in Jonesboro and the game wa still pretty close.

Most people like Hud because of his ridiculous contacts list w/in Mississippi and from
what they saw/heard while he was here. Merlins and Hud did not get along as they ate very different. HUD works his arse off recruiting like O did an maybe how Freeze learned how to do.
