Name another profession where job changes are scrutinized

to the degree of D-I head coaches. I'm sure in some cases the coaches and their agents bring the heat on themselves, but put yourself in LM's situation.

Events beyond his control unfolded to put him squarely in UM's sights. He can come out and straight-up lie, and say he doesn't want the job. If he later chooses his mind, he's a liar with no integrity or loyalty. If he soft-pedals it and says "now is not the time" or "I'm focused on [insert game here]," he's accused of stringing two schools along, jeopardizing game preparation and recruiting, and playing one against the other for more money.

I don't think any of us would want to be in that situation. If a headhunter calls me, it would be on the QT. Nobody would have to know about it until I made my decision. If I go looking, I can do so discreetly and not harm my current job security.

That just doesn't happen in CFB. So with that in mind, I offer two modest proposals:

1. Institute a no-tamper rule that makes coaches off-limits until after their team's season is over. This would completely eliminate the leaks, sources, innuendo, and rumor-mongering that inevitably spoils the bowl season for many schools. It wouldn't stop rantards, but it would be a good start.

2. Push back National Signing Day one month. This would take the pressure off schools looking for a new coach, and on coaches who might be candidates for other jobs. It would allow about two full months between the very end of bowl season and the MNC game, and the LOI day.

Some will say that pushing it back makes it hard on the HS athletes. That can be mitigated by modifications to recruiting during the school year. More/longer dead periods, etc. Kids still could commit early if they wanted.
