If you were at Shady Cannon, it most likely was Steinberg. He has a friend and business associate who lives there.

I thought that he was recently out of the sports agent business? Not sure. He had a bankruptcy this year and there was some sort of scandal relating to his management.

He did represent June Jones. He also was Troy Aikman's agent. I am not familiar with other college level coaches he may have represented in the past.

Ok that makes sense. Like I said, by the way he was talking I couldn't tell if he was still working or not. Either way it was just strange with everything that came out yesterday.

Here's an anecdote to shed some light on these types of rumors. (true story!)

First a little background. My father-in-law is now quite senile and in his 90's, but back when Dinardo was fired as the LSU coach in 1999, he was in his late 70's and only semi-retired, and semi-senile. He has always been a huge LSU fan, but he had NO offical or unofficial ties to the university which might earn him the right to call himself a "booster".

So, when LSU fired Dinardo, and LSU was in the middle of its coaching search, my father-in-law made a few phone calls and was able to contact Howard Schnellenberger, who had previously won a national title at "da U" but who was unemployed at the time!

Father-in-Law: "Hi Coach Schnelleberger, this is DOCTOR xxx, and I'm calling to gauge your interest in the LSU head coaching position..."!

Schenelleberger: "Wow, really? I'd like to hear some more details. Who are you, again?"

Father-in-Law: "Coach, I'm DOCTOR xxx, a "big supporter" of LSU football, and this is just an informal call. But let me tell you that a lot of people around here are very impressed with your resume!"

Schnelleberger: "Well, thank you very much DOCTOR! Let me give you the number of my agent. We would be very interested in hearing from the administration at LSU!"

My Father-in-Law was very impressed with himself, but much to his chagrin, he couldn't get anyone at LSU Football Ops to take his calls!

To this day, I wonder about the list of people that Schnellenberger must have spoken to about that phone call. His wife. His agent. His barber? His buddies? Did he he or his agent ever call LSU?

So, a little perspective... lots of people talk a big game in these situations, but it doesn't mean crap until you hear it coming out of Les Miles' own mouth!

Thanks. He was a real pistol in his heyday! My Father-in-Law always had an oversized ego, and a larger than life personality.

Do people actually pay attention to what agents are in/out if the game?

That's a little sports obsessive.

Leigh Steinberg is THE agent of sports agents. He revolutionized the business and in large part made it what it is today.

The movie Jerry Maguire (or at least the character) was partly based on him, IIRC.

His very public bankruptcy was news in SI and other publications.

Not really that obsessive, IMO.
