I have a friend that took some kind of sports history class last semester at LSU. The week after the Tennessee game, Alleva came in to give a speech. At the end of the class, he opened the floor for questions. Of course the teacher told the class they could not ask "when will Miles be fired" or anything to that extent. Well, someone in the class asked, "If you were the new AD at a different SEC school, and your first job was to hire a head football coach, who would be on your short list?" Alleva then took a second to laugh at the question and answered, "It would have to be someone with head coaching experience, not just a well thought of coordinator."

i just dont think hes only a coordinator. auburn believes this too or they wouldnt have bumped him to $1.3M/yr. UT cant believe how much auburn is paying their coordinator

Great post. I,ve heard Allevea has said this on more than one occasion. And it is a formula that has worked well for Lsu for over a decade now.
Hire an experienced head coach that has demonstrated he can run a winning program in a major conference. (i.e. Saban - MSU, Miles - OSU)

The thing that differentiates Malzahn from just another coordinator is that he's the real head coach in Auburn.

I agree with this in general.
However, LSU has a long history as a defensive school.
There's a DC in place.
The defense is set right now.
With a new HC, we need an offensive minded coach who can complement that.
