These searches produced:

34-24 Saban
28-21 Miles
10-25 Orgeron

What makes this search different? I know a lot of folks have faith in Woodward but he can only control so many factors. Saban was a homerun hire but if LSU brings in a guy who is 10 games above .500, this board will implode.

LSU wound up on these 3 hires for different reasons but is the fanbase quick to dismiss some candidates because they aren't "homeruns"? I can list the reasons why someone would want to coach at LSU but it's not for everybody. The SEC is only getting more competitive and expectations are higher than ever. The new hire will know that producing the greatest season in program history buys you about 19 months (ed deserves to be fired imo).

The 3 guys you listed all won national championships. At no point in our history (or pretty much any school's history) could you say "the last 3 coaches won a natty."

ETA: That being said, I agree with your point. a lot of our fans think we can just take whomever we want. Unfortunately being a top 5 job doesn't mean you can take your choice of coaches from all but 4 other colleges.

Hell, look at Bama's struggles to find a coach between Bear and Saban.

Saban took over a 5-6 team and went 9-2 his last year, so I could understand the hiring based on trajectory. His teams were improving yearly.

Miles was 7-5 his last year at OSU. Best season was 9-4 with a bowl loss sandwiched somewhere in the middle of his tenure.
Really didn't understand that hire at the time.

And we all know O's history.

And a massive contract that pays you exceedingly well in the event the school fires you.

Plus, the greatest season in school history will buy you FAR more than 19 months as long as you don't follow it up with the two worst seasons in two decades. Hell, Miles won a title in 2007 and played for another in 2011. That bought him 4.3 seasons after 2011.
