I am looking forward to seeing how he defends the spread. LSU coaches need to take notes.

A 70 year old guy recruiting for the Cover 2 scheme against the spread, interesting.....

Yeah, who would want to ever play for one of the greatest defensive minds to ever coach football at any level?

I'm sure he is going to love having to convince 17-18 year old kids to come to Tenn. Saban will eat this guy's lunch.

This kind of remark shows you do not know much about Monte Kiffin. The guy is one of the best Defensive coaches to ever coach in the NFL. He is a coaching legend in terms of defense. The marks he has made on the game of football are incredible and are felt all the way down to the high school level. Monte Kiffin will be one of the premier Defensive Leaders in all of College Football from day one when he takes the job at Tenn and his units will be hard to prepare for week in and week out in the SEC. Coach Kiffin is really helping his cause by bringing in his father to run the defense. A very smart choice to say the least.

You are correct. One of the best in the NFL. It is totally different dealing with college talent. Mike Sherman was a decent NFL coach and sucks arse in college. Saban sucked in the NFL and look what he's done at Bama. I guess your saying that Monte will make Tenn better than the #4 defense in the country. Only time will tell.

Bottom line is Monte is probably not going to be doing a whole lot of recruiting. That is his 34 year old son's job. Monte will be game planning, which if you haven't noticed, he is pretty damn good at. And yes, I think the Cover 2 is a good defense for the spread. It takes away the big play and allows your corners to make plays in the running game. I'm curious to see how Kiffin tweaks it against Florida.

I'm sure Monte has no idea of this concept.
Actually Saban didn't suck in the NFL. He had a bad year in his 2nd year. His first year the team improved greatly and had a solid year for a team that had been terrible years before his arrival. Saban built a great defense at Cleveland before he got into college coaching again. Again Monte is a defensive Coord NOT a head coach so both of your arguments do not really hold water in this debate. I think Monte defenses will be awfully good and some of the best in CFB once it is all said and done.

I'd take him at LSU right now...wouldn't you?

I guess time will tell. I just don't see how you bring in a 70 year old and think that he is going to relate that well with them when, for the last decade, he's only dealt with professional players that a much more talented.

Monte Kiffen (MK) - Hey kid. I've seen your tape and you remind me of a young Derrick Brooks.
Talented Kid (TK) - Really? He's a stud and has a ton of interceptions in his career.
MK - Yeah, I taught him his technique and it comes down to two simple rules that most NFL guys never learn.
TK - What's that?
MK - Why don't we ask him. By the way, can I have my superbowl ring back. Thanks.

TK-I will coach, I'm going to FSU next week and I'll ask coach Andrews how Derrick got so good.

Suddenly the Lane Kiffin hire by Tennessee looks alot better to me.

I had a feeling Mike Hamilton wasn't going to hand over the keys without the understanding that "wink wink" Monte was going to be in the deal.
Remember, Hamilton went out on a limb and hired Bruce Pearl, that seemed to work out just fine.
It will take time to turn it around, I hope fans can understand and be patient.

I know Lou Holtz is a crazy old man, but he said that Monte Kiffin was the best coach he ever worked with (they were together at Arkansas) and that if he came to Tennessee the Vols would keep teams from scoring no more than 6 points.
Now, I wouldn't go that far, but to doubt that Monte Kiffin is a defensive genius of epic proportions is foolish. He will be able to recruit with his name alone. He's Monte Kiffin.

I've heard from Day 1 that Monte will not be the DC. He is looking to help his son build the program, and act as a right hand and a position coach. Somebody like Orgeron, who workied at USC with Lane would be DC. I could see Monte running the Defense the way Saban did at LSU. Not the DC, but hands on and a mentor to Ed.
