plenty of QBs can throw like Manning if you gave them his experience, his 'system', and the amount of practice he puts in.

there's multiple QBs who can sling the ball up and down the field

And how many QBs have his experience, "system", and put in as much practice as him?

I kind of like the attitude of we have 5 lineman each over 300lbs and running backs 200 plus and some speedsters you won't be able to find behind the 6'5" lineman and we are going to run it right at you behind a 275lb full back named J.C. Copeland and if you can stop it, more power to you. And right when you think we are handing the ball off we are going to throw it to 6'0" plus receivers who are going to be wide open because you have 8 in the box.

it's not there yet, but as the game evolves, there will be more and more players like Newton and Vick who can run and throw.

The problem is running QBs get hurt in the NFL. There will never be a big move towards those type of offenses because they get your QB killed in the NFL. The drop back passer will always dominate the offensive philosophy in the NFL.

I think it is a better fit for LSU to go pro-style based on the quality of our recruits and what their expectations are. If I was a vanderbilt or team with not as much talent then you find one stud who can carry you in a spread offense. Correct?

Perhaps... there's also never been one that's 6'5, 255 pounds and runs like a gazelle like Newton.

Think about it. Why would Les go to a spread option QB run-pass offense when Mett and Rivers are prototype pro-style QB's?.He made the decision long ago on the direction of the offense and personal.

There's never been someone like the latest guy, but it never changes. There was never anyone like Randall Cunningham, Steve McNair, Dante Culpepper, Mike Vick, Vince Young now its Cam Netwon.

Spread option if Krag is the man. That's what we need instead of junk ball fads, and I think what Les believes he needs to win more championships. You will see more teams move away from Leach, Mullen, Kelly..... And go to what Bama, Stanford, and most NFL teams use.

These "junk ball" fads have produced a fair share of NC's here recently (i.e. this year). The only way they are successful, however, is with the perfect QB/OC mix. A successful pro style is easier to manage and staff in one regard.

As defenses adapt to the spread and tone down it's successes, you will absolutely see more traditional offenses re-emerge as the standard. However, I don't believe the defensive game is there yet.

You dismissing the spread as a "junk ball fad" is actually quite fricking stupid.

It is no mystery that Les prefers a run-oriented, pro-style offense (refer to his UM background). We had an OC who contradicted that.....and at times the styles clashed and produced statistical disasterous results.

EXACTLY. If a quarterback ever comes along who runs like Vick and passes like Manning, his coach will make sure that he spends most of his time "passing like Manning".

Sorry I wasnt aware that the spread is on its way out

the spread is not on the way out. it has existed in college and the pro's on a routine basis since the days of the ole "run and shoot" of the houston oilers. LSU will run some plays running the spread. but, power football with a good passing game has won championships and will continue to do so. there are not enough real good spread qb's around. also, just because a qb can run doesn't make his offense the spread. the read option isn't the spread. it's the read option. i'm no football genius but it seems to me that many, if not most, people call everything that isn't the power I the "spread".
