One major hole in his scheme is his blitz schemes. I notice that so called Mustang package he uses he likes to rely on his d-line for the pressure. That is great when you have players like Dorsey sitting there...not whenever you have a DE without a sack on the year.
He needs to apply pressure from blitzes but when they've done that...they weren't that successful. Its mostly his blitz schemes, especially if you watch how Alabama blitzes. He did a pretty good job in the first half of Arkansas and in typical Chavis MO, completely blew it in the second half because he doesn't "adjust".

His DLine schemes suck. His adjustments Suck. If all your DL every does is run bull rushes, its not that hard to stop. He sucks at disguising blitzes, and I wonder why it is that when he's defense has been its best the past 8 years, the team's offense has been horrible. It makes more logical sense to say he brings the offense down than bad offense brings out the best in him.

If they gave him more than a $50k/year raise, I will be extremely pissed. He's not worth $550k+

The jury is still out on Chavis in my book. I need to see the results when he's playing with a full deck. Our LBs and DBs were decent this year but our d-line was the worst one that we've had in a decade from a talent perspective. The only lineman we had that's decent is Nevis.
Let's see how some of the young guys like Davenport do next year.

So you give the guy a 25%+ raise with the jury still out? frick Les Miles. Either we gave him $650 k for the last two years OR we gave him an extra year at $600k+ meaning we are now likely on the hook for $500 and $1.2M in buyouts just for the freaking coordinators if we suck next year. That is $1.7M in buyouts on top of Miles' $7.5M or $11.25M buyout if it comes to that.
I am sorry, not worth it for an "organized coach" that won't kill you but won't win you games.

Chavis has gone ten straight years now of never allowing more than 20 points per game IIRC.
I think the fact that a coach on the hotseat like Richt would go after the Chief tells you how much other coaches respect his body of work.
Ten years of top four in the SEC defenses will do that for you.
Basically, we had to keep Chavis. There's too much competition out there right now for too little quality hires.
Right now, UGA, UF, and TAMU are all looking for top flight DC's. The raise we gave Chavis will look cheap as opposed to whatever we'd have had to spend to win the bidding war for another quality DC.
