Your best employee may have an opportunity to multiply his salary by 5 at one of the best companies in the nation.

He wants to listen to their offer, so you fire him. Good move.

Yeah, it's not as though people are lining up for the Cincy job. Whether or not Kelly takes the job will be determined within the next few days. If he does take it, send him on his way. If he doesn't, well then you still have your coach.

In business, its standard practice to keep your trap shut and negotiate without the whole world knowing. Its also standard to give a 2wks notice. As a business owner, if an employee of mine-even my top performer-comes in and gives me a two week notice-I will probably ask if there is anything I can do to keep him. If he says no-I will look for his replacement while he works his 2 weeks.

Its a whole different ball game when considering a HC at the D1 level. A successful program needs "continaity"...you have assistant coaches and recruits who are there probably because you charmed them in some way. In this case with Kelly-a major bowl game is in play also. If he's talking to another school-he is telling you he is not 100% happy and focused at your place. When it becomes public-recruits get nervous-assistant coaches get nervous and the players get distracted. Then as an athletic director, you have to have another coach-hopefully a good candidate is still available-really soon.. I would even say as an AD, you may want to have a yearly "short list" even if your current coach says he's happy-just in case!!!
