Tenn has had some good classes, but their recruiting is certainly not on the level of LSU, Georgia and Florida this decade.
still ranked considerably higher than their defenses though

This is sooooooooo hilarious if true.

It's not like Chavis is terrible, he's better than what you have now imo. It's funny because the styles are the same.

he's an upgrade from the current situation but a definite downgrade from pelini IMO. if this is who miles hires i'm going to start to doubt that LSU will regain their position as a top program

At least until Miles is fired and we actually go after a high profile coach.

chavis has been tenn's DC since 96 and in that time he hasn't had one single defense as good as any of pelini's 3 D's at LSU. he's also had some pretty damn bad ones lately. he's a safe hire, he definitely won't be horrible, but i really hoped miles would hit this one out of the park and hire someone that could be great at LSU. a crowton-esque hire on defense

A big plus for Chavis is his availability right now. If you want the bigger fish you will have to wait till after bowl season. I think we need a DC now so we can keep and add on to what is going to be the best recruiting class in tiger history.

ow would you feel with Chavis as DC and Ed O as DL coach/recruiting coordinator?
this I like, I would love to see some yaw, yaw fire on the sideline.
Alot of this game is about matching intensity. We do not do it.

Rumor? Inside info?
There's at a minimum mutual interest. He would be the safest hire Les could make. Guy is not being pursued by the NFL or HC gigs. He has as much experience as one can have without being a senior citizen. He's available right now (in theory), could start recruiting very soon (if Tennessee is typical, they will have some incentive to keep the assistants during the transition period. However, unlike our recent hires, their transition team seems to be moving with a sense of urgency so that the 2009 recruiting class is preserved) if things are worked out with Tennessee.
I just don't like the style of defense he has run of late. I can't argue with his long-term program and success.

John Chavis to LSU
Great hire! Chavis is probably the best DC in the SEC right now.

Im jumping in late on the topic. This morning in the 8 o'clock hour on 680thefan during the Coach Donnan show, Jim said all his "source brothers" said Chavis to LSU was done. Jim Donnan has been wrong many times when related to LSU so...

if anything comes out of this and we do in fact hire Chavis instead of a guy like Robinson or even Orgeron, I'm declaring an all-out war on Miles Mania
Posted on 12/1/08 at 5:48 pm to Books
its a meh hire
a meh hire would have worked last season, but Les needs a homerun here.
