Is the sentiment the same for Turner Gill ...

after his bowl loss to the equally remarkable Randy Edsell (who doesn't get the help of the media in his job searches)? I thought of this because the team he beat for the MAC championship is getting beat in the GMAC bowl right now. A lot of you were so sure that TG was the next great young coach, Auburn was racist, and blah, blah, blah. Is it that he is really such a good coach or is the MAC not even the MAC of the recent past? Do you still think he really deserves a SEC level HC gig?

I don't think anybody on this website agreed with that.
But OMG, he lost his bowl game to a BCS school? Clearly, he's overrated.

Gene Chizik was more deserving?

I'm just saying that the resume everyone was so enamored with is less than great.I also pointed out that the guy coaching (Randy Edsell) the team that just beat Buffalo had the same or better resume than TG, but he didn't get the same public demand to hire him at a BCS level school like Auburn. I think maybe Gene Chizik could have done the same thing or better at Buffalo this year.
There was a former coach who said Iowa State had the least amount of BCS caliber players of anywhere he had seen before in a conference like the Big 12. It is possible that GC is a better hire than TG. Quite possible.

I agree with this, but Gill was supposed to be an actual candidate for the AU job, and he was passed over for someone with a much inferior resume. I think some people were just trying to make sense of it.

I have no idea what you base this on. Take a look at the Buffalo football program's track record before Gill was the HC.

I've seen it and it is pretty impressive. I'd counter that with this suggestion; take a look at the resumes of some of the greatest coaches who ever lived and give me a few who didn't have GC's same problems early in their careers. I just never understood the public outcry that Auburn had to hire TG. I'had never seen that before in any coaching search. Curley Hallman had some records at USM that looked better than Nick Sabans at MSU, so you never know.

They weren't that bad. And it's not like it's impossible to win at ISU. Look what Dan McCarney did there before Chizik.

I hear you. However, to really look into the ISU program transition between DM's to GC's ISU teams, i'd have to know;
what players were left there for GC?
what was the overall talent level of the team?
how many juco guys did DM use while coaching his last few years?
and plenty of other things to find out to make a truly informed judgement of both of their tenures at ISU. Plus, who knows what GC would have been able to do at ISU if he satyed a few more years. I guess we'll find out about GC soon enough, and I guess I also want you to be 100% right about him.

some of them really were, or were real close to this bad.

Jerry Moore wasn't considered either, he has 13 coach of the year awards in his career and has been dominate at Appy State. Hell he even has coached at Arky,TTech, and Nebraska. It must be because he has DHT.

TG has done an amazing job at Buffalo. When they moved to Div1 they might win a game a year. Now he has them competeing for Confrence championships. If you can't say that he's doing a great job there you have something wrong with you.
Edsell has done a similarly great job at UCONN and has been a hot commodity for a few years now. He has been approached and turned down jobs. He turned down Syracuse this year and Stanford a year or so ago and another BCS school as well.
Edsell has turned down job opportunities, Gill has not.
More so than Chizic. Actually, maybe more so than Kiffen. Take it in perspecive, was Les a big name before LSU? How about Saban before he came to LSU? Fulmer before UT?
Gill at Buffalo is comparable to Spurrier at Duke IMO, so I'd have to say yes.

Spurrier's record at Duke was 20-13-1. (.606)
Gill's record at Buffalo is 15-23. (.395)
You really find these comparable? That is more than just a little bit of a reach.

I think they are comparable in the fact that they took over laughing stock programs and led them to confrence championships.
Remember, Duke had been in the ACC since the 50's when SOS took over in the late 80's. Buffalo has been Div1 in the MAC since 1999. They only had one winning year in Div II. Seriously, before Gill took over they held the record for second longest losing streak in Division I history and the longest losing streak in Division history. (They won 8 games in 5 years) I'd say 15 wins and a confrence championship is pretty damn impressive.

No, nobody thought Auburn was racist except Barkley. They just thought that Auburn was making a stupid decision because Turner has actually done something as a head coach. Chizik has not.

Turner Gill will get his shot next year. From my view, he is an impressive guy who will get an improved HC gig. He was perfect for Syracuse and not hiring him was a mistate.
