If I'm a sought after up and comer I take this job! I know I'm an excellent coach, and LSU is a perfect opportunity. I want to compete with vs the best! I want to beat the best teams and coach the best players.
LSU DC means I get to do both. I can also pick my coaches (save for one who I really need anyway) and use our collective skills to teach our guys to overcome any obstacles ON OR OFF the field.
Doing the job at LSU can be a stepping stone or a destination depending on what I want. I can put myself on any school's HC prospect list by proving my worth in CFB's toughest Conference & Division. I could be 1st in line at LSU or somewhere else if I choose.
I've worked for and planned for this type of opportunity my entire (though short) career and I'm going to take it and run with it!

... I would choose to work for an intelligent coach like Payton, Kelly, Sarkisian, etc.

Payton: Won 1 Super Bowl and has only been to the NFC title game once since. Had maybe the best roster in the NFL the last four years and couldn’t get to the Super Bowl.

Kelly: Success at Oregon, bombed out in the NFL and marginal progress at UCLA.

Sarkisian: Moderate success at Washington, fired at USC.

There are smarter coaches out there than these guys.

Well, sure there are. But as this post is about a DC you might want to name a few on that side of the ball, my man.

Because LSU isn't a stepping stone program

Not the HC position, anyway. But Aranda just showed it can be. I say it's up to the Coach. Fact is you have to want to compete vs the best and have some stone guyunes to even survive at any Coaching position in the SEC. If a dude can hold his own---even at the doormats (see Derek Mason etc...)---in this Conference, doors will be open to him if he would choose to leave.
You hunting with a bow?

People generally don’t like working for bosses that are less intelligent than they are.
