I feel completely different on coaching candidates than I did in 2021

In 2022 I was all for the big game hunting splash hire, I told myself “we are LSU” so I thought we had Lincoln Riley in the bag. The BK hiring news came out of nowhere but I thought because of his consistency he could lead us to a championship. Like most were saying “he just needs the playmakers from the south.” Obviously I couldn’t have been more wrong. Changed how I view coaching hires now.

Coaching is such a crapshoot that you have no idea who is going to be great. I feel great about a lot of the candidates thrown out and see the positives in all of them from Lane and Lanning to Sumrall, Key, and Golesh types. If we can have a $20m roster every year with a good coach that wants to be here and wants to work I’m excited. I’m way less concerned that it’s Lane or bust (although I’d love Lane here)

We were handcuffed in 2021 with the state of our roster and organization.

It was always going to be coach with tons of experience.

This year is different and we are much more attractive option to the hot names

The problem in the SEC is you have 8 or so programs who think they should be competing for a national title annually. Bama/UGA/LSU/AU/Tenn/UF/OU/Texas. That's not even counting programs like A&M/Vandy/Missouri/South Carolina who put together good seasons every few years for sure.

No matter what, half of those programs WILL FAIL to meet annual expectations. Even if the SEC gets 5 teams in the playoff this year, half of those 8 won't have their name called.

In the B1G you have less programs who expect it, but not by many. Just some programs aren't made to do that. OSU/Oregon/USC/Michigan/PSU/Nebraska are probably the 6 who are like the SECs 8, but Nebraska doesn't really have the horses, and Indiana/Ill/Washington/MSU have the ability to put a really good season together every few years. So if the B1G gets 3 slots this year, you again have half the programs who "expect" to make it not making it.

When you fail to live up to potentially unrealistic expectations for 3 years in a row, you will likely get fired in 2025 and beyond

I’m kind of okay with most of the names being mentioned. Kiffin would be fun, and bring immediate energy. Sumrall is more of a gamble, but is young with a lot of potential. Key could return a lot of physicality, and Drinkwitz brings youth and a lot of offensive wrinkles.

The facts right now is all the top coaches are taken and aren't going to be leaving their spots. Most teams looking for a head coach right now are going to have no choice but to take a big risk with a HC from a smaller school, or take a big risk with an assistant coach. This is the weakest field for head coaches that we've seen in a while.

I agree with all of this, and I'[m hopeful that somehow, some way that this results in shorter coaching contracts like in the NFL. Most of those contracts are for 4-5 years, not 8-10 like in college.

exactly same position as me. I would rather a young up and comer that is either at a smaller school or is currently a P4 coordinator if we cant get Lane or Lanning.

Yeah I think a lot of us are at this point.

And its generational, Urban Meyer or some other retread is not going to move the needle for the majority of fans.

The good news there are lots of good, proven young coaches out there. But LSU would have to be innovative which is not something a big school can do easily. The expectation is big name, big career blah blah.

I hope we go younger.

I think the question for us hiring a younger coach is how do you make sure you arent hiring the next sunbelt Billy?

Looking at the top 25 rankings, with some exceptions like deboer and cignetti (who proved themselves at multiple jobs and are older), most of those coaches have major (big10/SEC) coordinating experience. Maybe I need to be iffy on Sumrall or key and more interested in a guy like Golesh (not sure if he actually called the plays for huepel), Dillingham, or even Schumann but I know they probably won’t go with a first time coach.

wait what?

look i agree on younger....but lets not go full fricking retard bro.

outside of nick saban, urban is the best CFB coach in the last 40 years.

you can chill with that shite. If he wants to come, you back the fricking truck up and throw in a new CO-ED everynight and a bull for his wife to have fun with too.
